While South Africa's ODI cricket captain AB de Villiers was sending deliveries soaring above the fence at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday where he scored a 61-ball 119, his father (who is AB de Villiers as well) was handling a delivery of a different kind in a small town called Warmbaths in South Africa.

Dr AB de Villiers could not watch his son in full flow on television because he was helping a woman give birth to a child through Caesarean section. It was a delicate operation and De Villiers Sr was happy to inform us that mother and child are fine. "I didn't watch the match on Sunday as I was busy in the operation theatre.

The patient that I operated on can't be named but I can confirm that the Caesarean section done at the St Vincent Hospital was successful with both mother and baby doing well," the doctor said yesterday.

Dr AB de Villiers is a general physician and surgeon with interests in sports medicine as well. He is attached to St Vincent Hospital, which is a private Catholic hospital at Bela Bela in Limpopo Province.

Son AB preferred to make his career in cricket, but he was a good science student as well and had once received an award for his science project from the late leader Nelson Mandela. "AB's mother did watch the match on TV at home," said Dr De Villiers.

Family B'lore-bound
The dashing batsman's family will witness AB's 100th Test appearance — at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore (November 14-18), according to his father. Incidentally, the cricketer's grandfather is also AB de Villiers.
