Zimbabwe were dismissed for 216 in the last over as SA took a 1-0 lead in the three-game series. The second and third matches are at the same venue on Tuesday and Thursday.
Amla batted through the innings and shared in century stands with fellow opener Quinton de Kock and No 3 Faf du Plessis.
The home side's bowlers failed to capitalise on helpful conditions.
