Chennai: It's not a T20 game, but Mumbai secured an eight-wicket win over Goa in just 5.4 overs with 266 balls to spare in the Vijay Hazare Trophy Group C one-day match yesterday.
However, the Ranji Trophy finalists Mumbai failed to make the cut, finishing third in the table after Bengal and Gujarat from Group C.
Riding on superb bowling performances by pacers Abhishek Nayar (4-23), Dhawal Kulkarni (3-17) and Shardul Thakur (2-27) Mumbai bundled out Goa for a paltry 95 in 35 overs. Skipper Sagun Kamat and Darshan Misal showed some character scoring 23 and 22 runs respectively. Chasing an easy target, Mumbai lost openers Shreyas Iyer (14 in 9 balls) and Rohit Sharma (4 in 3 balls) by the third over. However, Suryakumar Yadav and skipper Aditya Tare prevented any further damage. Yadav scored a quick-fire 40 off just 11 deliveries with four hits to the fence and three sixes. Tare remained unbeaten on 38, also from 11 deliveries, and he hit three fours and four sixes.
Meanwhile, the MS Dhoni-led Jharkhand beat Jammu and Kashmir by six wickets to enter the quarter-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Kolkata. Owais Shah scored 59, while Rasool added 45 as J&K scored 184. Chasing, Jharkhand reached the target in 35 overs. Kumar Deobrat scored 78, while Shasheem Rathour and Saurabh Tiwary chipped in with 36 and 30 respectively.
