13 January,2026 11:24 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentAhead of the second ODI match against New Zealand, Ayush Badoni has received a maiden call-up to Team India after all-rounder Washington Sundar has sustained an injury and has been ruled out of the series. Following the maiden call-up for Badoni, former Team India cricketer Aakash Chopra feels that the selection committee was looking for a replacement who can match Sundar's potential, but as they didn't find it, the think tank has provided an opportunity to the Delhi-born cricketer. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "Washington Sundar is not there. So Ayush Badoni has come in his place. I think the Indian selection committee was looking for a like-for-like replacement, and that is not available. Ayush Badoni bowled a lot and batted for India A. He is also bowling for Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and is economical". "So the selection committee went for Ayush Badoni. It could be a slightly unpopular choice because he hasn't scored even 1,000 runs in List A cricket. He does not have those many wickets, seeing which you would say he has broken the door and come in," he added. While Badoni has not been able to bat much for Delhi in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy — scoring just 15 runs in three innings — he has bowled some useful spells for Delhi, with a brilliant 3/30 in 10 overs against Railways, 1/28 in seven overs against Services and 0/21 in five overs against Gujarat. Chopra then raised questions on why Riyan Parag or Rinku Singh didn't get opportunities despite both players having the ability to bowl. "You might be wondering why Riyan Parag couldn't have come, or why Rinku Singh couldn't have been thought about. Riyan Parag has just started coming back after a very long injury layoff. Another middle-order batter was available in the form of Rinku Singh. Although he has started bowling a lot now, he is not basically a bowler. He is a batter who bowls occasionally," said the former cricketer. The second ODI match between Team India and New Zealand is scheduled to be played at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. (With ANI Inputs)
13 January,2026 09:32 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentIn the WPL 2026 match against Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians skipper Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai. The "Paltan" will enter the clash on the back of one victory and one loss. They will look to secure another win in order to take an edge in the ongoing competition. On the other hand, the Giants have registered two wins in as many matches and will aim to continue on their momentum. After winning the toss, Harmanpreet stated that during night matches, she prefers chasing and also said that the team has been ticking all the boxes so far. The skipper also added that the side is focused on batting positively in the first six overs. Hayley Matthews will feature for the "Paltan" in this match. Nat Sciver-Brunt will miss out on the game as she is not feeling well. Mumbai's captain is also falling short of just 55 runs to achieve the feat of becoming the second player to complete 1000 runs in the history of the Women's Premier League. Currently, she has scored 945 runs in 29 WPL matches for the "Paltan". With a top score of an unbeaten 95 runs, she also has nine half-centuries to her name. On the other hand, GG captain Ashleigh Gardner said that the powerplay phase has been huge for the side, and they have got a good amount of experience in their lineup with Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine. She is also hopeful of putting a big total on the scoreboard against MI. Anushka Sharma will miss the match for Gujarat due to injury, and Ayushi Soni is set to make her debut in the competition. GG will heavily rely on their skipper, Gardner, to provide stability in the middle-order. In their previous match against Delhi Capitals (DC), she had smashed 49 runs in just 26 balls, with the help of four boundaries and three maximums. WPL 2026, MI vs GG: Confirmed playing XI Mumbai Indians: Amelia Kerr, Hayley Matthews, G Kamalini (WK), Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Nicola Carey, Sajana Sajeevan, Amanjot Kaur, Poonam Khemnar, Sanskriti Gupta, Shabnim Ismail, Triveni Vasistha. 13 January,2026 09:32 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentNew Zealand batsman Henry Nicholls said that considering the limited amount of one-day cricket between global tournaments make the ongoing series against Team India more important than ever. While the next 50-over World Cup is still 22 months away, questions on the relevance of the format and context of the ongoing series have resurfaced as focus primarily remains on next month's T20 World Cup 2026. "Like you say there's not as much one-day cricket between major events, I think that makes these series even more important," Nicholls told the media ahead of the second ODI match against the "Men in Blue". The match will be held on Wednesday at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. "A few of us have been playing some List-A cricket back home, so we have got a bit of the format under our belt. But it's a format that we enjoy playing so when you have those series now, they are more important than ever with limited amount," Nicholls added. When asked if the visitors were able to get any learning from playing against the stalwarts such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Nicholls said facing the Indian bigwigs was a challenge. "That's the challenge when you come over here and certainly as a young group, even as an experienced group, is when you play against players who have played that much cricket. But also to see it firsthand in the first game and the way the guys adapted, certainly from a bowling point of view, bowling to those guys and finding ways to try and put them under pressure," he stated. "If we are able to do some of those things even as an inexperienced side, then the nature of cricket is (that) if you're able to take wickets, you're able to put teams under pressure," added the 34-year-old cricketer. Ahead of the second match, the "Black Caps" will heavily rely on their middle-order batsman Daryl Mitchell to replicate his performance from the previous match. The right-handed batsman scored 84 runs in 71 balls, including five boundaries and three maximums. (With PTI Inputs)
13 January,2026 04:12 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentAlyssa Healy, who is one of the finest cricketers to have played for Australia, will retire from the game after the home series against Team India in March. She will lead the Australian team for the final time in the three-match ODI series and one Test match in Perth. Healy will not be a part of the T20I series against the "Women in Blue", as she will not be around for the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 in the UK. Healy said that she is still passionate about representing Australia, but has lost the competitive edge that kept her driven over the years. "It's with mixed emotions that the upcoming India series will be my last for Australia. I'm still passionate about playing for Australia but I've somewhat lost that competitive edge that's kept me driven since the start, so the time feels right to call it a day," she said. Healy also expressed excitement for the India series. "Knowing I won't be going to the T20 World Cup this year and the limited preparation time the team has, I won't be part of the T20s against India, but I'm excited to have the opportunity to finish my career and captain the ODI and test side at home against India, one of the biggest series on the calendar for us," she said. Healy has played an integral role in Australia's domination over the past decade. Considering she has won eight world titles, six in the T20 format and two in one- day cricket, losing the semifinals to eventual winners in the ODI World Cup last year was a disappointing outcome for Healy and her team. She has represented Australia in 10 Test matches, 123 ODIs, and 162 T20I games. Healy also has 489 Test runs at an average of 30.56, 3563 ODI runs at 35.98 with seven hundreds and 3054 runs at 25.45 with one century in T20Is. Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg called Healy one of the all-time greats of the game. "Alyssa is one of the all-time greats of the game and has made an immeasurable contribution both on and off the field over her 15-year career. On behalf of Australian cricket, I'd like to thank Alyssa and congratulate her on an incredible career that has inspired so many and changed the game for the better. We look forward to celebrating her achievements throughout the series against India," said Greenberg. (With PTI Inputs)

13 January,2026 10:40 AM IST | New Delhi | AgenciesHaving been a rival as well as a teammate to Virat Kohli, New Zealand all-rounder Kyle Jamieson says he can only marvel at the Indian superstar’s craft as he operates at a “different level”, one where great batters have their way even if bowlers try to contain them. Kohli looked set for a record-extending 54th ODI century on Sunday in the opening ODI against the Kiwis that India won by four wickets. However, Kohli fell seven runs short of his milestone when the imposing Kiwi bowler had him caught at mid-off for 93. Jamieson, who has shared the dressing room with Kohli at Royal Challengers Bengaluru Bengaluru in the IPL, said it’s tough to determine if the Indian batter has been at his best right now. “It’s hard to say from an opposition point of view whether this is the best version of him or not — he’s been pretty good for a long time, right?,” Jamieson said. “You feel every time you come up against him, you’ve got to be at your absolute best to even compete. He’s on a different level, he plays the game on a different level to most cricketers, [and] he looked pretty good for the most part. “We’ll just have to try and come up with some plans to try and contain him, but [then] you don’t contain the greats, they have their way a little bit, so just enjoyed watching him play for sure,” Jamieson added. Jamieson was by far the best bowler from both the teams returning figures of 4-41. “He [Kohli] controlled the tempo through the middle and set the innings up for his team,” Jamieson admitted. 45No. of Player-of-the-Match awards in ODIs for Virat Kohli, behind only Sanath Jayasuriya (48) and Sachin Tendulkar (62) This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 13 January,2026 10:39 AM IST | Vadodara | PTIIndia vice-captain Shreyas Iyer lavished praise on Virat Kohli, saying the batting great has been “walking the talk” for years, the latest being his masterclass in a successful run chase vs NZ in the ODI series opener. Kohli struck a fluent 93 off 91 balls. “Whatever we talk about his innings, it would be less. We have been seeing it for so many years now, he’s been doing it consistently. The way he rotates the strike and he takes on the bowlers, he basically walks the talk,” Iyer said in a video posted by BCCI. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 13 January,2026 10:39 AM IST | Vadodara | AgenciesThe ICC on Monday indicated that it is unlikely to accept Bangladesh’s demand for a change of venue for its T20 World Cup matches in India after an assessment report of the country’s security concerns placed the threat perception at “low”. As per ICC sources, the world body’s risk assessment report does not flag any specific or direct threat to the Bangladesh team if it participates in the tournament starting February 7. It also contradicts claims made by Bangladesh sports ministry advisor Asif Nazrul that Mustafizur Rahman’s inclusion in the team would contribute to the overall threat. Bangladesh are due to play four league stage matches in India. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 13 January,2026 10:32 AM IST | New Delhi | PTIDefending champions Karnataka stormed into their fourth successive Vijay Hazare Trophy semi-finals with a thumping 54-run victory over Mumbai via the VJD method here on Monday. With the tournament’s leading run-getter Devdutt Padikkal (81 not out; 95 balls, 11x4) and veteran India batter Karun Nair (74 not out; 80 balls, 11x4) unbeaten, Karnataka were cruising at 187-1 in 33 overs while chasing a modest 255 when rain stopped play. The VJD par score at that stage was 132, and with Karnataka 55 runs ahead, they were declared winners. Earlier, heavyweights Mumbai, already without pacer Tushar Deshpande due to personal reasons, suffered a major blow when top batter Sarfaraz Khan (303 runs at 75.75) was ruled out after being struck on the finger during net practice. In his absence, Mumbai managed only 254-8. In a largely one-man show, Shams Mulani struck an impressive 86. VJD method explained The VJD method is a mathematical formula used to revise targets in rain-affected limited-overs matches. Developed by Kerala-based civil engineer V Jayadevan, it is an alternative to the DLS method and has been used in domestic matches in India since 2007. 13 January,2026 10:28 AM IST | Bengaluru | PTIGujarat Giants’s Australian skipper Ashleigh Gardner highlighted the importance of Indian players in the Women’s Premier League side, noting the contribution of the local players in her team’s narrow four-run victory over Delhi Capitals here on Sunday. Gardner attributed the GG’s victory to their Indian players, especially the bowlers. “Overseas players make these competitions, but Indian players win you these competitions. Our bowlers did an amazing job — our two left-arm spinners especially. Anushka as well [with a sensational save],” said Gardner in the post-match presentation.
