The visitors are in a spot of trouble at 4-176 at lunch in reply to Australia's first innings of 445.

Jean-Paul Duminy is 10 not out and wicketkeeper Mark Boucher is on four with only the tail to come.

Captain and opening batsman Graeme Smith retired hurt for 30 yesterday after a rising delivery from Johnson fractured his left hand.

Left-armer Johnson struck in the second over of Day 3 as an attempted off-drive from Jacques Kallis (37) finished in the safe hands of Matthew Hayden at first slip to leave the Proteas at 2-131.

Thirty runs later AB De Villiers, who scored a match-winning century in the first Test in Perth, was run out by a brilliant throw by Johnson from mid-on for 11.

Hashim Amla had anchored the innings with his 203-minute 51 but he was lbw to Victoria's debutant medium-pacer Andrew McDonald at 4-166.
