Mahendra Singh Dhoni took the cricket world by surprise when he suddenly announced he was stepping down as India's limited overs captain about a week ago.

The 35-year old wicket-keeper has retired from Test cricket in 2014 but continued to lead the team in ODIs and T20Is.

India's Test captain Virat Kohli was then appointed to lead the team in all formats of the game.

According to an exclusive report by Hindustan Times, it is apparently stated that MS Dhoni did not relinquish his post as ODI captain but was asked to step down by the selectors.

According to reports, MS Dhoni was asked to quit from his post by Indian selection committee chairman MSK Prasad. The two apparently met during the Ranji Trophy semifinal match between Jharkhand and Gujarat.

Dhoni has captained India in 199 ODIs with 110 wins, 74 losses, 4 draws and 11 no results. His match winning percentage is 59.57.
