"Surya gave me opportunity to bat at No 3 so wanted to repay his faith": Varma

When Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav knocked on Tilak Varma's hotel room door to tell him that he would be batting at number three in the third T20I match against South Africa, the youngster was filled with gratitude and promised his skipper to make it big. Once he reached his 51-ball-century, second fifty coming in just 19 balls, Tilak Varma pointed towards the dug-out and blew a flying kiss to acknowledge his captain, who sacrificed his own batting position for the youngster. "It was for 'SKY', our skipper because he gave me a chance to bat at number three," Varma told reporters after India's 11-run win in the third T20I against South Africa. "I love batting at number three, but in last two matches, I played at number four. Last night he came to my room and said that 'You will bat No. 3' and he said it's a good opportunity. Go and express yourself. I told him, 'You have given me an opportunity, I will show you on the ground'", said the second youngest Indian centurion in T20 Internationals. Also Read: Hardik Pandya joins elite list of Indian cricketers Tilak Varma's unbeaten knock of 107 runs saw him smash 8 fours and 7 sixes. His knock came in 56 deliveries in which he also flicked six off the opposition's fastest bowler and his former Mumbai Indians teammate Gerald Coetzee. Varma was shouldered by Abhishek Sharma, who smashed a half-century. "The team backed us even when we flopped. They told us to play the brand of cricket Indian team is known for and the skipper and management (interim head coach VVS Laxman) said, "Bindaas khelna Agar wicket gire tab bhi (Play freely even if you lose a wicket)." Tilak Varma also opened up about missing out on two international tours of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka due to back finger injuries but said that he knew he would score when his time came. "During the last IPL game, I had a finger dislocation and was ruled out for two months. Then during nets post recovery, I sustained another fracture. So I missed two back-to-back series, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. I was feeling bad that I missed out on two series and good opportunities. But I had to remain patient, focus on the process and keep working hard. I knew my time would come and when right time comes, I will score runs." Persistence of team management at times when going gets tough helps and Varma is reaping rewards for that. "I was waiting for this opportunity and unfortunately in the last match it didn't happen but captain and management also supported a lot, and the results I am getting now is because of their complete backing."He is a handy off-spinner and feels that he has worked hard on his bowling as he wants to be seen as an all-rounder. "The ball is really coming out well and I have worked hard on my bowling. I want to contribute as an all-rounder." (With PTI Inputs)

"Whatever happened on the field after the game wasn’t the nicest thing": Rahul

India wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul has opened up on the animated chat between Lucknow Super Giants’ owner Sanjiv Goenka and him during the 2024 IPL when LSG were hammered by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). LSG were in a need of a big win over SRH to qualfiy for the playoffs, but the team suffered a humiliating 10-wicket loss. The LSG owner appeared visibly displeased after the match’s outcome and was seen engaged in an intense discussion with skipper Rahul along the boundary line at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Also Read: "I don’t expect him to shake hands": Ponting on Gautam Gambhir “As a team, we were all in shock because we were at the stage in that tournament where every game was very important. We had to win, I think, three out of five games or two out of the last four games. When this happened, it was just a big shock for all of us,” said Rahul on Star Sports. “Whatever happened on the field after the game wasn’t the nicest thing to be part of or something that anyone wants to see on the cricket field. I think it did affect the entire group. We still had a chance to make it into the playoffs. We had a chat as a team and tried to regroup, put everything aside, and try to put our best foot forward. We tried our best, but unfortunately, our best wasn’t good enough always. It was a bummer that we couldn’t really make the playoffs or win the season as we had hoped,” he added. Before the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India's KL Rahul recollected the days when he used to smash big sixes to prove himself as a big hitter. "I think I grew as an individual and as a player. As a youngster, I tried really hard to be someone I wasn't, trying to hit big sixes to prove I could. It just wasn't coming naturally. What changed for me was watching Rahul Dravid in one of the IPL seasons around 2011 or 2012. He stayed true to his technique, and he was one of the best batsmen," Rahul said on Star Sports. Further, KL Rahul stated that watching Team India's Rahul Dravid and New Zealand's Kane Williamson bat, made him realize that he doesn't need to try so hard. "Seeing him do well in one-day and T20 cricket without changing his game changed something in me. I also spent time with Kane Williamson at SRH. He didn't get many chances, but he'd still go back and play amazing white-ball innings for New Zealand. Watching Dravid and Williamson, I realized I didn't need to try so hard. I had certain gifts I could use in T20 cricket to find success", added KL. (With Agencies Inputs)

ODIs will get phased out: Mark Waugh

As Australia grapples with a tight international schedule, cricket legend Mark Waugh foresees a future where One-Day International (ODI) cricket is largely reserved for major tournaments like the ICC World Cup and Champions Trophy. Also Read: Pakistan should stop playing cricket with India: Rashid Latif Waugh, reflecting on Australia’s recent 1-2 ODI series loss to Pakistan with a second-string side, has voiced a realistic yet bittersweet prediction: “Given the scheduling of all these T20 tournaments around now and with scheduling, it’s squeezing out 50-over bilateral series. Obviously, it’s a great thing to play for your country, you don’t want to disrespect that. But by the same token, you want to be playing for something that’s a bit more than just a three-game series thrown in the middle of all these other tournaments and series. I think it will get phased out. I think that’s probably the way to go,” said Waugh. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) asking for a written confirmation from the BCCI for India’s inability to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. “There’s a big possibility that Pakistan can stop playing cricket against India. Had I been in power, then, yes, I may have taken this strong step. I would not blame anyone for this. Aaron Finch

"Carey, Rishabh is aggressive, game will go on one or two ways quickly": Finch

Former captain Aaron Finch believes Rishabh Pant and Alex Carey will be crucial in determining the outcome of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Finch feels the two wicketkeepers have the ability to shift the momentum in their team’s favour in the event of a top-order collapse. “I think the key could be Alex Carey and Rishabh Pant. The two wicketkeepers are going to be so important,” Finch said on Willow Talk Podcast when asked where this series is going to be won or lost. Also Read: Tilak’s maiden ton guides India to 219-6 against SA “A time or other in series, the top order will get knocked over as both fast bowling attacks are so good and they will get on a roll. For me, it is that really crucial role of Alex at No. 7 and Rishabh at No. 6 likely,” he added. Both Pant, who played a key role in India’s series victory last time, and Carey are known for their aggressive brand of cricket. “Carey is aggressive, Rishabh is aggressive. The game is going to go one or two ways really quick. And I think that will be so important. “Maybe when you are five down and the second new ball comes just before stumps and they take it for 50 that 10 overs before stumps, that changes the momentum of the game,” Finch said. Centurion Neev helps St Sebastian win

St Sebastian High School’s (Chembur) left-handed No. 3 batsman Neev Rana, 15, notched up his maiden century against IES Modern English School (Dadar). Neev scored an unbeaten 139, the feature of their mammoth 457-run victory in a second-round match of the MSSA Harris Shield inter-school cricket tournament at the New Era ground, Azad Maidan, on Wednesday. Neev feasted on the opposition’s bowling attack and smashed 24 fours to record his highest score in  the Harris Shield and ensured St Sebastian reach a massive total of 503, including 156 penalty runs (for slow over-rate), for five wickets in 39 overs. Also Read: ‘Crowd is helping me’ St Rocks’ Jash Nayak Neev was associated in two sizable partnerships — 83 with captain and opening batter Aryanson Patel for the second wicket and 168 runs for the fifth wicket with No. 5 batter Ishwar Alure, who scored 86 runs (12x4). Later, the St Sebastian bowlers proved too hot to handle for the Dadar schoolboys and were bowled out for a mere 46. Leg-spinners Siddhesh Wadgure (3-5) and Aryanson Padwal (2-0), and medium pacers Aryan Yadav (2-14) and Nayan Borade (2-7) demolished the rival innings. In another match, Parle Tilak Vidyalaya (Vile Parle) left-arm spinner Atharva Narkar returned figures of 14-1-60-5 to bowl out  Vasant Vihar School (Thane) for 110 in 36.1 overs. Darsh Tiwari (24) and opener Balpreet Singh (20) were the only two batters to get some runs. Later, Parle Tilak easily chased the target, making 118-5 in 24.5 overs. Top-order batsman Aryan Desai remained unbeaten as they crossed the finish line. Meanwhile, St Rocks High School (Borivli) spinner Jash Nayak’s impressive bowling (6-17) was the highlight of their seven-wicket win over former champions Rizvi Springfield (Khar). Batting first, St Rocks dismissed Rizvi for a paltry 74 runs before  easily surpassed the total making 75-3 in 27 overs. Opener Aatish Lad stayed unbeaten on 36 while Satyam Yadav contributed 34.

India’s Virat Kohli during a batting session in the nets at the WACA in Perth, Australia, yesterday

Dont fret, just reset, says Brett

Former Australian pacer Brett Lee has advised India skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli to hit the “reset button”, work on their technique and hit the ground running in the five-Test series against Australia, beginning in Perth in less than 10 days. The two batting stalwarts will be keenly observed during the Border-Gavaskar series Down Under following their underwhelming performance in India’s embarrassing 0-3 Test whitewash by New Zealand recently. “When you have a couple of bad runs back to back, that’s when the pressure sets in. So, I guess the thing now with someone like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, they’ve just got to go back to the drawing board,” Lee said on his YouTube channel. Brett Lee “They are champions because they do the basics better than anybody else. Then, just hit the reset button.” Lee also warned that the Australian pacers would be aiming to attack Rohit and Kohli with the new ball, and that they should quickly sort their batting. Also Read: Aishwary-Sangeeta win mixed team gold “[They should] work on their technique, freshen up, get away from cricket for as much as they can and then hit the ground running when they are in Australia because I can promise you the Australian fast bowlers will be attacking Rohit Sharma with that brand-new ball,” he added. Rohit has managed 588 runs in 11 Tests at an average of just 29.40 this year, while Kohli has accumulated 250 runs in six Tests at an average of 22.72. India captain Rohit Sharma. Pic/Getty Images Lee felt the tendency of the two batters to be too aggressive might have resulted in their poor show this year. “It’s hard to put your finger on why they [Rohit and Kohli] failed. If you look at the way that Rohit Sharma got out, a lot to the quicks. I can’t say there’s a technical fault there because I’ve seen him play for the last decade. I still believe he’s one of the best players of the pull shot, but maybe he’s a little too aggressive.  Maybe there were a couple of shots... was there a technique issue? Was his bat leaving his pad a bit too early? Was he getting that far forward or not enough forward? Or, was being a little bit hesitant?” Lee wondered. 250Virat Kohli’s total runs in six Tests this year at an average of 22.72 588Rohit Sharma’s total runs in 11 Tests this year at an average of 29.40 This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. "He’s a very thinking cricketer as well": Ravichandran Ashwin on this AUS player

Senior India off-spinner R Ashwin says he has figured out ways to tackle Australian batting mainstay Steve Smith in the upcoming five-match Test series, extending their fascinating, decade-old rivalry in top-flight cricket. The two seasoned campaigners would face off during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting November 22 in Perth. They have in the past spent time together at IPL franchises Rising Pune Supergiant and Delhi Capitals, helping Ashwin to “break down the game plans” of Smith. “Steve Smith is especially fascinating as a player against spin. He has a unique technique, even playing fast bowling,” Ashwin said in an interview with 7Cricket. Also Read: "Whatever happened on the field after the game wasn’t the nicest thing": KL Rahul on spat with Sanjiv Goenka “But with spin, I think he came in with sound game plans and sound preparations, and yeah, he used to execute it come what may. And over the years, I’ve found ways and means to break it down. “His time at Delhi Capitals, his time at RPSG, all these net sessions that I’ve seen him go about his business gave me an insight as to how he prepares and what he likes and doesn’t like,” Ashwin added. Ashwin, who first bowled to Smith during India’s 2013-14 tour of Australia, lauded his fierce rival for being a “thinking cricketer”, who has so far scored 348 runs in 570 balls while facing the ace spinner. Smith has got out to Ashwin three times. “He’s a very thinking cricketer as well. He wants to get one up on you all the time. But, he’s got unique ways of practising and battling out with you in the middle. “And sometimes, as a bowler, when you’re watching a batter go through his process, you do identify whether you have him or not. And several times in these years of having played with Steve Smith, I’ve felt he has me,” Ashwin said. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. "I don’t expect him to shake hands": Ponting on Gautam Gambhir

Responding to Gautam Gambhir’s jibe at him, former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting on Wednesday said the India head coach was a “prickly character” and insisted that his comments on Virat Kohli should not be construed as a dig on the star batter, who himself would be worried about his prolonged lean patch. Ponting, in an interview to ICC, had said that Kohli’s poor form would be a concern and any other international player would have struggle to keep his spot in the Test side with just two hundreds in five years. He though had also spoken highly of Kohli’s ability to bounce back. Also Read: Sindhu on song, Lakshya off tune Gambhir, when asked about Ponting’s comments, said the Australian legend needn’t be concerned about Indian cricket. “I was surprised to read the reaction, but knowing the coach, Gautam Gambhir, he’s quite a prickly character, so I’m not surprised it was him who said something back,” Ponting told 7News when asked about Gambhir’s comments. Asked if he would shake hands with Gambhir if they crossed paths, Ponting replied:  “If he comes my way, yeah, I don’t expect him to [shake hands]. We’ve got quite a bit of history against each other. I have actually coached him at Delhi Capitals and he is quite a prickly character.” One of the greatest batters of his time, Ponting went on to explained what exactly he meant and felt that things were taken out of context about his Kohli comment. “In no way was it a dig at him [Kohli]. I actually followed it up by saying he’s played well in Australia and that he’ll be keen to bounce back over here. If you ask Virat, I’m sure he would be a little bit concerned that he hasn’t been able to make the same amount of hundreds as he has in previous years,” said Ponting.
