On this day in the year 1884, the first ever Test match was played at Lord’s between England and Australia. England went on to beat the Aussies by an innings and 5 runs. On this occasion, we give you some interesting trivia about the London-based cricket venue.

>> Lord’s is named after the founder Thomas Lord and is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club.


>> Lord’s is popularly known as the ‘Home of Cricket’

>> First established in 1814, the ground has a capacity of 28,000.

>> The first match played at the venue was between Marylebone and Hertfordshire in 1814.

>> Lord’s has also accommodated other sports besides cricket – a baseball game during World War I and Archery at the 2012 London Olympics.

>> Lord’s celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2014. Marking this occasion, Marylebone Cricket XI captained by Sachin Tendulkar played against Rest of the World XI captained by Shane Warne.

>> Graham Gooch has the most Test runs (2,015), centuries (6) and the highest individual score (333) at the venue.

>> Glenn McGrath has taken the most Test wickets (26) at the venue.

>> The highest team score recorded at Lord’s is 729/6 decl. by Australia against England in 1930.
