Several cricket records were set during an English county match on Tuesday. But did you know there are three Indian connections to them and one of them involves Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid? Find out...

Indian connect to cricket records being broken in England. What? Really?

Records are meant to be broken. And taking that maxim to heart, English county teams Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire set several records during their Royal London One-Day Cup game.

The record books had two new entries and some old ones wiped out in an astonishing run spree at Nottinghamshire's Trent Bridge ground on Monday which saw a record English one-day partnership and the most aggregate runs scored in a List 'A' match.

Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire set a new record for most runs scored in a 50-over fixture in England in a one-day match.

Nottinghamshire had racked up 445-8 - the second-highest List 'A' score ever recorded. The highest even now is Surrey's 496 for 4 against Gloucestershire at The Oval in 2007.

Notts openers Riki Wessels and Michael Lumb put on 342 (from 39.2 overs) -- the highest-ever stand in one-day cricket in England. Wessels was eventually dismissed for a career-best 146, off 97 balls, while Lumb made 184.

If Northamptonshire had chased down the target, it what would have been another record for a team batting second. But they fell short despite South African Rory Kleinveldt's 128 off 63 balls, which included nine sixes and 10 fours. Rory's teammate Adam Rossington also hit a quickfire 97 off 69 balls.

Northamptonshire managed 425, falling short by merely 20 runs. But in the process the two teams managed to score an unprecedented 870 runs in a single day -- a new total runs record, three more than what Surrey and Glamorgan had accomplished in 2002 during their Friend's Provident Trophy match.

Intrestingly, the Surrey-Glamorgan game was the one in which Surrey's Ali Brown hit the world record one-day score of
268.

THE INDIAN CONNECT

The pair broke a 17-year-old record held by Team India's Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. The Lumb-Wessels 342-run stand saw them break Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid's record 318-run stand against Sri Lanka at Taunton during the 1999 World Cup, which was till now the best one-day partnership record in England.

The second India connection is the 19-year-old substitute fielder Anuj Dal. The Indian-origin cricketer took the crucial catch that ended Kleinveldt's incredible inningsand effectvely ensured his team's victory.

19-year-old Dal, who was playing for Nottinghamshire's Second XI also caught Graeme White for 40. At the time Northamptonshire needed 21 from the final two overs.

The other link is Indian-origin cricketer Samit Patel. The Nottinghamshire all-rounder took three vital catches, claimed the wicket of White at the important juncture and as a batsman had also scored 29 runs off 18 balls.

SOME OTHER RECORDS REWRITTEN

Wessels and Lumb's 342-run partnership means they now hold the record for highest partnership for Nottinghamshire. The previous partnership record for Notts was 217 - also held by Lumb, with Alex Hales, against Middlesex at Lord's in 2014.

Lumb's 184 is also a county record -- the highest one-day cricket score -- bettering the unbeaten 167 made by Notts' Paul Johnson in 1993 against Kent.

Lumb's 184 also surpassed Ian Botham's 175 not out for Somerset as the highest score in a List 'A' game against Northants.

Their stand was the biggest in a one-day game between two first-class counties since Tim Curtis and Tom Moody put on an unbroken 309 for Worcestershire's third wicket against Surrey at The Oval in the 1994 Natwest Trophy semi-final.

SO NEAR YET SO FAR

When Wessels went for 148, the duo fell just 31 runs short of breaking the all-time best one-day partnership in
cricket of 372 between West Indies Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels, for the second wicket against Zimbabwe at Canberra in the 2015 World Cup in February last year.

The duo also fell just short of the highest-ever one-day first-wicket stand, an unbroken 367 set in a South African one-day game by Morne van Wyk and Cameron Delport for Dolphins against Knights in Bloemfontein in October 2014.

The 870 runs scored in the English county match meant they were just two runs short of the world record - which was set in the South Africa vs Australia ODI match at Johannesburg on March 12, 2006. The tie saw 872 runs being scored, with the Proteas, chasing 435 to win, managing 438 with a ball to spare thanks mainly to Herschelle Gibbs, who made an astounding 175 off 111 balls.
