Mumbai boy Shreyas Iyer finally underlined the talent that he is known to possess as he played a gem of an innings to help Delhi Daredevils register a stunning two-wicket victory over Gujarat Lions at the Green Park in a match of fluctuating fortunes yesterday.
Iyer held one end up after Daredevils had lost the in-form openers Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant early in pursuit of 196 for a win. When Karun Nair too departed things did not look bright for the visitors. But Iyer found an able partner in Pat Cummins and then Mohamed Shami as he took the Lions bowling apart. Though he was out for 96 missing out on a well deserved century, the team edged to a thrilling win with two balls to spare.
Daredevils earned bragging rights in a match between teams, who are out of contention for a berth in the Playoffs. It was Aaron Finch (39-ball 69) who gave the Gujarat Lions innings substance after Dwayne Smith and Raina had departed early.
