Former India batsmen Ajit Wadekar and Pravin Amre expressed confidence over out-of-form Ajinkya Rahane coming good on the forthcoming tour of South Africa. Rahane did not figure in the playing XI during the ODI series against Sri Lanka and Wadekar felt, "he should keep playing. Surely, the selectors have enough faith in him and I am sure he is going to score a lot of runs.

"I have seen even Sunil Gavaskar going through a bad patch. It happens to great cricketers as well." Wadekar was speaking at a function where he was felicitated by the Dr Dayal Foundation at a suburban five-star hotel yesterday. Other cricket personalities like Amre, domestic great Amol Muzumdar and BCCI administrator Prof Ratnakar Shetty earned wholesome recognition.

Amre, who has been a mentor to Rahane, remarked: "He has to be really positive going into the South Africa series. He averaged more than 65 on his last tour there. The selectors have a lot of faith in him and maybe that's why he is the team's vice-captain. I'm sure he is aware of his responsibilities."

India's 1992-93 Test series in South Africa kicked off in Durban where Amre scored a Test debut hundred on a difficult pitch. "Obviously, it's about getting runs when you are going through a lean patch. Sometimes, even a 50 matters. That's what happened to me in South Africa. "The 20 runs I got in a side game is what helped me build my confidence to get that hundred in the Test match," recalled Amre.
