Dilip Vengsarkar, who was picked as a 19-year-old collegian to represent Mumbai in 1975, hailed the selection of 17-year-old Prithvi Shaw in the Mumbai squad that will take on Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy semi-final at Rajkot on January 1.

Vengsarkar, the vice-president of the Mumbai Cricket Association and National Cricket Academy director, told mid-day yesterday: "It’s a good selection and an opportunity for Prithvi." Whether Prithvi will be part of the playing XI on Sunday is to be seen, but Vengsarkar said, "He played in the u-19 Asia Cup and scored runs in almost every match. Rahul Dravid (U-19 coach) speaks highly of Prithvi and as he is in good form, so this is the best opportunity for him to make the playing XI."

Vengsarkar had an inauspicious start to his Ranji Trophy career when he was trapped leg before wicket by Gujarat’s Dhiraj Parsana for a duck at Bulsar. However, a few days later, in the Irani Cup at Nagpur, he tore apart a Rest of India attack comprising Bishan Bedi and Erapalli Prasanna to shreds for 110 which included 11 fours and seven sixes.
