Sandhu applied for a coach's post via email yesterday, apart from sending a hard copy of his application to the Indian cricket board. Sandeep Patil was the first 1983 World Cupper to apply, followed by Shastri on Monday.

"I am aware that Sandeep and Ravi have applied for the job. I wish my teammates the best," Sandhu told mid-day yesterday. "I've known Sandeep for a long time and where Ravi is concerned, we go back a long way since our University cricket days," added Sandhu.

Sandhu's coaching stint
Sandhu has been entrenched in coaching ever since he quit first-class cricket. From coaching at the local level, he graduated to being one of the coaches at the hugely successful BCA-Mafatlal Bowling Scheme in the early 1990s. In 1996-97, he and skipper Sanjay Manjrekar formed an excellent pair to guide Mumbai to a Ranji Trophy triumph.

Sandhu was also the coach when Mumbai beat Mark Taylor's Australians by 10 wickets in 1998. The former swing bowler and handy batsman has also coached Maharashtra and Baroda apart from stints at the National Cricket Academy.

Currently, he is part of the Mumbai Cricket Association-IDBI Federal Life Insurance Bowling Foundation headed by former Australia pace ace Jeff Thomson.
