Indian Sports Ministry delivers verdict on sporting events against Pakistan

The Indian government has reformed a policy to deal with Pakistan in sports events and declared that the athletes and teams will be allowed to participate in the international sporting events that also have teams or players from Pakistan. However, India will refrain from participating in competitions in Pakistan and will not engage in any of the bilateral events. Along with this, the Centre also declared that the visa policy will be "simplified" for sportspersons, team officials, technical personnel, and office-bearers of International Sports Governing Bodies for a "maximum" period of five years, a source in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) told PTI on Thursday. Taking to X: "In so far as bilateral sports events in each other's country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India": Ministry of Youth and Affairs, Govt of India pic.twitter.com/s1P0b1AbTT — ANI (@ANI) August 21, 2025 The development on the matter emerged due to the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 clash between Suryakumar Yadav-led Team India and Pakistan. The high-voltage clash is scheduled to take place on September 14. Following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, fans across social media platforms have been opposing the clash with the neighbouring country. India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7 to avenge the attack, which killed 26 people, and dismantle the terror infrastructure across the Line of Control and deeper inside Pakistan. In the aftermath of India's response, the strained relationship between the two neighbouring nations further slumped. While taking into account India's rise as a credible venue to host top-tier international events, individual athletes and teams from the nations will be able to compete against Pakistan in multinational tournaments hosted by India. The Asia Cup 2025 tournament is scheduled to kick off between Afghanistan and Hong Kong on September 9. Team India's management has appointed Suryakumar Yadav as the skipper, while Shubman Gill has been named as his deputy. The "Men in Blue" will begin their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against the UAE on September 10. The most electrifying match between arch-rivals, India and Pakistan, is scheduled to be played on September 14. Team India will then lock horns against Oman to conclude their group stage matches on September 19. In case India manages to seal a place in the Super Four stage, there is a possibility of another India-Pakistan game taking place in the event. (With PTI Inputs)

Ajinkya Rahane quits as Mumbai captain ahead of 2025-26 season

Veteran Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has announced his decision to step down as captain of the Mumbai team ahead of the upcoming domestic season. The 37-year-old made the announcement on Thursday through a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). "Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it's the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I've decided not to continue in the captaincy role," Rahane wrote on X. He added, "I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player and will continue my journey with @MumbaiCricAssoc to help us win more trophies. Looking forward to the season." Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it’s the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I’ve decided not to continue in the captaincy role.I remain fully committed to giving my best… — Ajinkya Rahane (@ajinkyarahane88) August 21, 2025 Rahane’s tenure as captain saw a significant revival in Mumbai’s domestic fortunes. Under his leadership, Mumbai ended their seven-year Ranji Trophy drought by lifting the coveted title in the 2023–24 season. He also led the team to Irani Cup glory in the 2024–25 campaign, reinforcing Mumbai's reputation as a domestic powerhouse. Despite relinquishing the captaincy, Rahane clarified that he has no plans to retire and will continue contributing as a player in all formats. His vast experience and composure at the crease are expected to remain crucial assets for Mumbai as they aim to build on recent successes. Rahane last featured in competitive cricket during the IPL 2025 season, where he represented Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He scored 390 runs across 13 matches, playing a steady role in the top order. His leadership experience and calm presence had earlier made him a natural choice for the leadership group at KKR. Rahane, who famously captained India to a Test series win in Australia in 2021, is not on the national selectors' radar anymore but he remains determined to make a national comeback. He has played 85 Tests for India with the last one coming against the West Indies back in July 2023. He has also featured in 90 ODIs and 20 T20 Internationals. Rahane also reinvented his game in the shortest format, eventually leading to his elevation as Kolkata Knight Riders skipper in IPL 2025. Both Rahane and another senior batter Cheteshwar Pujara are continuing to play in hope of making an India comeback.

The couple, who tied the knot in December 2020, officially ended their marriage in March this year

Chahal fires cryptic post days after ex-wife Dhanashree's tell-all interview

Just days after Dhanashree Verma, the former wife of Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, opened up about their separation in a candid interview, the leg-spinner took to social media to share a cryptic message. Chahal, 35, posted a series of photos from a recent outing on Instagram. However, it was the caption that drew attention: "Million feelings, zero words." The post, while not explicitly referencing anyone, has been interpreted by many as a subtle response to Dhanashree’s emotional revelations in her recent interview with Humans of Bombay.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Yuzvendra Chahal (@yuzi_chahal23) In her first interview since the separation, Dhanashree addressed several sensitive topics, including allegations that she had faked her marriage and her emotional journey following the divorce. She also discussed the struggles she faced under public scrutiny and the challenges of rebuilding her identity post-divorce. "I still remember when I was standing there and the verdict was about to be given. Even though we were so well-prepared mentally, I got so emotional. I started howling in front of everybody. I couldn't even express what I was feeling at that point. I just remember that I just kept crying, I was just howling and crying. Of course! All of that happened, and he (Chahal) walked out first," Dhanashree said. While Chahal did not make any direct comment about the interview or his ex-wife, the timing and tone of his latest post have led many fans and followers to connect the dots.  The couple, who tied the knot in December 2020, officially ended their marriage in March this year. Since the divorce, both had largely remained silent in public, until Chahal broke his silence. Talking about the message on the t-shirt, Chahal said in a candid conversation with Raj Shamani, "Mereko nahi karna tha drama (I didn't want to do any drama). I just wanted to give one message and maine woh de diya (which I gave through the T-shirt)."  "Kyunki saamne se kuch cheez hua tha, aur mera pehle mann nahi tha. Fir saamne se kuch hua toh fir maine kaaha ab sambhaal lo, ab mujhe nahi parwah kisi ki. Maine na kisi ko abuse kra, bus mujhe message dena tha (Something happened from the other side, and I didn't initially intend to respond. But then something happened, and I thought, 'Enough is enough, now I don't care about anyone.' I didn't abuse anyone; I just wanted to convey my message)," he shared.

Iyer tipped to replace Rohit Sharma as ODI captain; BCCI snubs Gill: Report

Shreyas Iyer’s omission from India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 has sparked widespread criticism from fans and former cricketers. However, even as the selection snub stirred debate, fresh reports suggest that the Indian cricket board and selectors may have far-reaching plans for the middle-order batter, possibly as the future captain of the ODI team. A day after chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his panel hinted at grooming Shubman Gill for leadership across formats by naming him vice-captain of the Asia Cup-bound T20I squad, a report in Dainik Jagran revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is actively considering Iyer for the long-term ODI captaincy, potentially through to the 2027 World Cup. While no official announcement has been made, the development points to a strategic roadmap, especially as the team gears up for a generational transition. Iyer, 30, has long been viewed as one of India’s most reliable batters in the 50-over format. His performances in the recent Champions Trophy strengthened his credentials, where he played a pivotal role in India’s title-winning campaign. Iyer scored 243 runs in five matches with scores of 15, 56, 79, 45, and 48. With 2845 runs from 70 ODIs at an average of 48.22, including five centuries, Iyer’s resume as a dependable performer is firmly established. His leadership qualities, honed during multiple stints as IPL captain, most recently with Punjab Kings, have further enhanced his reputation as a potential successor in the ODI format. The timing of his elevation, however, hinges on current skipper Rohit Sharma’s plans regarding his international career. Rohit, who turned 38 earlier this year, continues to lead the ODI side, but with both him and Virat Kohli having already retired from T20Is and Tests, speculation is mounting over their future in the 50-over format as well. Sources indicate that the upcoming ODI series against Australia in October could mark their swan song. According to the report, senior BCCI officials are expected to meet following the Asia Cup to outline the path forward. Discussions with Rohit and Kohli will form a key part of that dialogue. Should Rohit choose to step down, Iyer may take charge as early as the Australia series. If not, the transition may be deferred, but the intent to groom Iyer as a long-term leader appears firmly in place.

Kuldeep down to No. 3 as South Africa’s Maharaj climbs to ODI summit

India’s premier wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has dropped to third place in the latest ICC ODI bowling rankings, released on Wednesday. South Africa’s left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj reclaimed the No. 1 spot following a match-winning performance against Australia in the first ODI of their three-match series in Cairns. Maharaj, 35, delivered a stunning spell of 5 for 33, earning him the Player of the Match award and propelling South Africa to a commanding 98-run victory. His efforts helped him leapfrog both Kuldeep and Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana to reclaim the top ranking, that he briefly held in November and December 2023. Among Indian bowlers, only Ravindra Jadeja joins Kuldeep in the top 10 of the updated ODI rankings, highlighting India’s limited movement due to a lack of recent matches since their Champions Trophy title win. Seales, Abrar make big gains West Indies pacer Jayden Seales surged 15 places to reach 18th in the rankings after a sensational six-wicket haul (6 for 18) in the final ODI against Pakistan. Pakistan leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed also climbed 15 spots to joint-39th, while West Indies off-spinner Roston Chase rose five places to 58th. Gill, Iyer shine in batting rankings India’s Shubman Gill continues to lead the ODI batting rankings with 784 points, maintaining his position at the top. Shreyas Iyer remains the only other Indian in the top 10, holding steady at sixth place. West Indies skipper Shai Hope broke into the top 10, rising two spots to ninth after his unbeaten 120 in the final ODI against Pakistan. South Africa’s Aiden Markram (up four places to 21st), Temba Bavuma (up five places to 23rd), and Australia’s Mitchell Marsh (up six spots to 48th) also made upward moves. Abhishek, Tilak dominate T20I batting rankings In the T20I format, Indian youngsters Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma continue to dominate, retaining the top two positions in the ICC batting rankings. India captain Suryakumar Yadav holds the sixth spot, while Yashasvi Jaiswal rounds out the top 10. South Africa’s Dewald Brevis climbed nine places to reach 12th after a consistent run of form, while Australians Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell moved up four and 10 spots, respectively, to sit at 25th and 30th. Ellis, Hazlewood, Rabada rise in T20I bowling On the bowling front, Australia’s Nathan Ellis broke into the top 10, moving up three places to ninth, with teammate Josh Hazlewood rising to 18th. South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada also made a notable jump, climbing from 44th to 37th in the T20I rankings. (With PTI inputs)

Kaif questions selection logic: 'If the selectors really like Iyer...'

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has voiced strong criticism against the national selectors and team management for omitting Shreyas Iyer from India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. Iyer, who led Punjab Kings (PBKS) to an impressive Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign as captain, was one of the standout performers this season. His exclusion from the Asia Cup squad has triggered widespread backlash from fans and former players alike. Kaif joined the growing chorus of support for the 30-year-old batter, expressing his confusion over the decision. "Shreyas Iyer's name didn't come up; the selectors said that it was a difficult task to fit him since only 15 could be selected. I can understand all that. I approve of you in this. But even after praising him, his name wasn't even in the standbys," Kaif said on his YouTube channel. India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed Iyer’s absence during the squad announcement, clarifying: “With regards to Shreyas, it's not his fault, nor is it ours. It's just that you can pick 15, and at the moment you'll have to wait for his chance." What surprised Kaif more was that Shreyas couldn't even find a seat in the reserves list. The former gun-fielder questioned the logic behind Dhruv Jurel being named in the reserves despite the presence of wicketkeepers Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma. "There is Jaiswal in the list, and you have Jurel. There is no need for Jurel. If the selectors really like Iyer, he should have been named in the standbys. If someone got injured, he could've gone there," he said. "You won't see Shreyas Iyer in the Asia Cup, which I think was wrong. His name should be in the standbys 100 per cent. Speaking of Jurel, you see Jitesh Sharma and Sanju Samson are already there in the squad. You pick Jurel there, and kept Parag in the standbys. I think there is no justice with Shreyas Iyer," he added. Iyer’s exclusion has raised further eyebrows in light of his recent performances. Iyer was India’s top scorer and the second-highest overall run-getter in the 2025 Champions Trophy, amassing 243 runs in five matches at an impressive average of 48.60. He struck two half-centuries, with a highest score of 79. In the 2025 IPL, Iyer carried his form forward, finishing as the sixth-highest run-scorer. Leading the Punjab Kings, he piled up 604 runs in 17 innings at an average of 50.33 and a blistering strike rate of 175.07. His campaign featured six fifties, with a best score of 97*. Another selection that drew attention was the inclusion of explosive all-rounder Rinku Singh. Despite a quiet IPL season with Kolkata Knight Riders, Rinku managed to retain his place in the squad. "Rinku Singh's selection, in my opinion, is because in the UPT20 League, he is bowling in the tournament as well. Since Washington Sundar is not in the 15-member squad, even Rinku Singh can bowl 2-3 overs on the UAE pitch," he said. India will kick off their campaign against the UAE on September 10, while the high-voltage game against Pakistan is scheduled for September 14, with both fixtures set to be played in Dubai. India will play their final group stage fixture against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. Team India squad for Asia Cup: Surya Kumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh Reserve players: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal. 'Need to bring cricket and glory back to Chinnaswamy Stadium': Venkatesh Prasad

Bring cricket back to Chinnaswamy Stadium was the dominant theme of an august function where former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad took the first solid step towards contesting in the upcoming KSCA elections by releasing the manifesto of his panel on Wednesday. After the June 4 stampede here in which 11 Royal Challengers Bengaluru fans lost their lives, no matches have taken place at this iconic venue which is now at the risk of losing next month's ICC Women's World Cup matches. "That's something that shouldn't have happened, (stampede) honestly. We have to be very proactive in liaisoning with the (state) government. We have to ensure that matches are played in Chinnaswamy Stadium as soon as possible," said Prasad during a press conference here after revealing the manifesto. Prasad hinted that his panel of contestants will have 16 members, even though he refrained from naming them at this juncture. The KSCA elections can be held in October or November as the incumbent regime headed by Raghuram Bhat will complete its three-year term on September 30. "We need to bring back the lost glory as far as the stadium is concerned. We would like to bring back international cricket. We have seen that every international match has been moved out of Bangalore. "It's such an iconic venue " Chinnaswamy Stadium which has been standing for the last 50 years. This is something which has never happened where the international matches have been moved out. It is not a good thing," added Prasad. Prasad and his fellow panelist Vinay Mruthyunjaya know that the road ahead, provided they are elected, is not easy, and they have certain plans to revive cricket in a stadium that has seen some memorable moments in the past. One of the main points in the manifesto is refurbishing the Chinnaswamy and transforming it into a smart stadium. "As a long term strategy, we want to develop the Chinnaswamy Stadium into a future ready smart stadium with cutting edge facilities. Also, we want to set up another world class stadium in Mysuru," said Mruthyunjaya. Increasing the capacity of the venue from the current 35,000 to at least 50,000 too is an aspect high on the minds of the aspiring panelists. "There will be no compromise as far as the safety of the fans or the spectators is concerned. I am sure we cannot take it to 80,000 or something like that. "So probably another 15,000 more, maybe up to 50,000, now it is 34,000-35,000. We need to work on that along with architects," said Prasad. Both Prasad and Mruthyunjaya are not unfamiliar to administration as they were vice-president and treasurer respectively during the administration headed by Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath. So, what has prompted Prasad, who since then turned into coaching and media world, to return to the administration? "Vinay and Santosh (Menon) came to me regarding the upcoming elections and discussed what we can do (to restore cricket) if we come back to power. So, I always had this thought in my mind about getting into administration at some point of time. "So, that's the whole purpose for us to be here, to release a manifesto and what this team is going to achieve. If we get into power, you've all gone through the manifesto, and in terms of what we are going to do for men's cricket because that's not something which has not happened. "There's no structure with men's cricket or women's cricket (in Karnataka) or even for the banks and industries. Those matches have not happened in the last few years, and not just watching international matches," he detailed. Former India women's captain Shanta Rangaswamy too attended the function and she stressed the need to revive women's cricket in the state. "We haven't seen much of women's cricket in the last three years. I'm told, subject to correction, that even men's cricket took a backseat because even their tournaments were not conducted in full. So, we want to launch structured (women) leagues equivalent to men's tournaments for all age groups," said Rangaswamy. During the press meet, Prasad was also asked about his opinion on India's upcoming match against Pakistan in the Asia Cup. The former pacer, who had several unforgettable on field memories against the arch-rivals, said a correct route will be decided by the BCCI. "As far as I know, bilateral (matches) are going to be and it's a huge issue. I'm with the BCCI when it takes a stand. "Whatever stand they take, I'm sure they're taking it in the interest of the citizens of the country. So, if they are taking a decision, so be it," he said. Despite batting standouts, Mumbai lose to TNCA XI in Buchi Babu tournament clash

Despite Test batter Sarfaraz Khan’s brilliant century (138 and 36), all-rounder Aakash Parkars unbeaten 90 and vice-captain Suved Parkar’s (72 and 40) good show Mumbai lost to TNCA XI (Tamil Nadu Cricket Association XI) by two wickets in their opening game of the Buchi Babu All India Invitation Cricket Tournament in Chennai on Wednesday. Opting to bat, Mumbai scored 412-5 in 90 overs and took an 87 runs first innings lead. Riding on opener Tushar Raheja’s 137 TNCA managed to score 325-5 in their 90-over game. However, Mumbai were bowled out for just 178 in 44.1 overs in the second essay as hosts left-arm spinner Siddharth M claimed 5-66.  While chasing a winning target of 265, TNCA’s opener B Sachin scored an attacking 115 off 105 balls to hand his team two wickets win with two wickets remaining.

Women’s camp at Vizag from August 25 ahead of ODI World Cup

The India women’s cricket team is slated to have a week-long preparatory camp ahead of the ODI World Cup in Visakhapatnam. Sources have told IANS that players are likely to report to Visakhapatnam on August 24, with the camp to begin the day after. IANS has learnt that the week-long camp is for the whole 15-member World Cup team and reserve players. “Those teams members who are in Australia for the ongoing ‘A’ tour may join the camp directly in Visakhapatnam after playing in four-day game,” further said sources. Recently, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team went through a ten-day preparatory camp at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru to prepare for the Women’s ODI World Cup, starting on September 30. The camp at CoE focused on strength and conditioning, match simulations, and skill-specific drills. The choice of Visakhapatnam as the venue for the upcoming camp will suit the Indian team, considering they are slated to play two of their World Cup league stage games there (against South Africa and Australia). ‘Rana’s numbers not flattering, Iyer could’ve been in reserves at least’: Chopra

Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has questioned Harshit Rana’s selection in India’s Asia Cup squad, saying that the seam-bowling all-rounder’s ‘numbers are not flattering’ and he had an ordinary time in IPL 2025. Rana made his T20I debut earlier this year as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube and went on to pick three wickets for 33 runs in India’s win over England in Pune. In IPL 2025, Rana claimed 15 wickets in 13 games for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at an average of 29.86, with his economy rate being at 10.18. “Harshit Rana’s case is very interesting. He came as a concussion replacement for Shivam Dube once, picked up three wickets as well, and became the Player of the Match, which was brilliant, but what about before and after that?” Harshit Rana and Shreyas Iyer “The last IPL was extremely ordinary. His performances have not been very good. His numbers are not flattering. It doesn’t seem like his numbers are strong enough to deserve a place in the side,” said Chopra on his YouTube channel on Wednesday. “The truth is that he won’t get to play all matches. In fact, he might not get to play even one match when Bumrah isn’t available,” added Chopra. Meanwhile, Chopra believes Shreyas Iyer should have been named in the reserve players list for the upcoming Asia Cup, citing that it doesn’t give out a great signal in terms of clarity over his T20I future.  “Shreyas’s name is not even there in the five reserves, and that is surprising. It’s understandable that you couldn’t have him in the 15 as you can’t play him in the XI, and you wanted lower-order batters as backup, where Shivam Dube is there, and Rinku Singh will be given another chance, which is absolutely par for the course. “However, a place could have been created in the reserve players at least, where you have kept Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prasidh Krishna. Shreyas’s name could have been there, but you haven’t kept it there either, and that doesn’t send a great signal,” Chopra said. Lalchand Rajput’s T20 World Cup stump, Australia tour bat now part of MCA legacy

Former India and Mumbai batsman and current UAE head coach Lalchand Rajput has donated two priceless pieces of cricket gear — a stump from the MS Dhoni-led 2007 T20 World Cup-winning campaign and a CB Series-winning bat — to the Mumbai Cricket Association’s Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum, which will be inaugurated on Saturday, August 23. “I had kept that stump with me as a souvenir, and it had autographs of all players from that winning team. I was happy to donate it to our MCA museum. I also gave MCA a bat autographed by our Indian players and a blazer which we received after winning the CB Series [Commonwealth Bank Series] in Australia in 2008,” Rajput, who was Indian team cricket manager then, told mid-day on Monday.   “The stump and bat are part of some beautiful memories that I’ve cherished, but whatever I am today is because of Mumbai cricket, so I felt that instead of keeping that stuff with me, I should  give it to MCA. I’m sure many people will be inspired by these things which are part of some great Indian cricket achievements,” added Rajput, a former Mumbai captain.
