The pay dispute that led Australia 'A' to boycott the tour of South Africa this month already seems to have made some impact in the cricketing world with a member of the India 'A' side ruing the 'missed opportunity'. India 'A' were scheduled to tour South Africa for a tri-series also involving Australia 'A'. But now with the Aussies pulling out, the series is will most likely be a bilateral one.
"I will miss playing against them (Australia). The depth in Australian cricket has always been phenomenal and since they are not touring it means we will be deprived of playing against some quality players." a member of the squad told mid-day.
"Last year we played against Glenn Maxwell and Peter Handscomb — players that are part of the Australian senior team. Playing against such players give us an idea where our games are. It is disappointing we won't be playing Australia this time around," he added.
The 'A' teams have been a springboard for the national side for the last few years in all three formats. It is interesting to note that four Australian players from the 'A' team were called for the national team last year in one of the formats.
A selector, who didn't wish to be named, told mid-day, "I remember Hardik Pandya getting us out of trouble with a fine knock against Jackson Bird and Kane Richardson, both of whom are members of the senior team. The minute he scored runs against them, he gained in confidence and whatever he has achieved in the last 12 months, one can attribute a lot to that confidence which he got by playing against them."
