In an online poll conducted by the broadcasters yesterday, 58% cricket-fans voted in favour of R Ashwin be sent up in the batting order.
The result of the poll, which was conducted when Ashwin had not reached his century, was announced immediately after the tailender’s ton at the Eden Gardens.
Meanwhile, Sunil Subramanium, the local coach of Ravindran Ashwin believes that his ward will open for India one day. “Mark my words, he will be an opening batsman for India one day,” Subramanium said over telephone from Chennai. “He has been a good batsman and has opened for his team in local cricket,” he added.
It is believed that former India leg spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan was part of the junior selection committee when Ashwin’s dream of becoming a batsman was cut short. Interestingly, Siva as a TV commentator saw Ashwin registering his second Test century yesterday. u00a0 u00a0 u00a0 u00a0
