Tom Latham overtakes Martin Crowe to become NZ's fifth-highest Test run-getter

New Zealand's wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham recently overtook Martin Crowe to become the Kiwis' fifth-highest run-scorer in Tests. He achieved the feat during the first Test match against Sri Lanka. In the first innings, Tom Latham accumulated 70 runs off 111 deliveries which was laced with 6 fours. So far in 81 Test matches, Tom Latham has 5,488 runs with 13 centuries and 29 half-centuries. He has an average of 40.05 and has the best score of unbeaten 264 runs. On the other hand, Crowe scored 5,444 runs in 77 Tests at an average of 45.36, with 17 centuries and 18 fifties. His best score was 299. He has 8,743 runs with an average of 54.98. The veteran also has 32 centuries and 45 half-centuries. His best score in the format is 251 runs. Coming to the match, SL won the toss and opted to bat first. Wickets fell in regular intervals for the Lankan Lions. However, another brilliant masterclass from Kamindu Mendis (114 in 173 balls, with 11 fours) and Kusal Mendis (50 in 68 balls, with seven fours) guided SL to 305. For Kiwis, pacer William O'Rourke (5/55) was the pick of the bowlers, with spin bowling of Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips giving both two wickets each. Skipper Tim Southee got one wicket. In their first innings, the Kiwis did lose regular wickets as well but had some half-century partnerships. Fifties from Tom Latham (70 in 111 balls, with six fours), Kane Williamson (55 in 104 balls, with four boundaries and a six) and Daryl Mitchell (57 in 86 balls, with seven fours and a six) kept the innings stable and an explosive cameo came from Phillips (49* in 48 balls, with two fours and five sixes) that took NZ to 340 and gave them a 35 run lead. Tom Latham and Williamson had a 73-run partnership for the second wicket, and so did Blundell and Mitchell for the fifth wicket. Prabath Jayasuriya (4/136) and Ramesh Mendis (3/101) delivered with the ball for SL and did not allow the lead to increase much. Now in the second innings, Sri Lanka has to get a huge lead in order to set a big target for the Kiwis. (With ANI Inputs)

See how Rohit, Gill and on-field umpire reacted to Virat Kohli's dismissal

After dismissing Bangladesh for 149 runs, Team India's opening batsmen Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma stepped onto the ground to give the side a dominating lead in the IND vs BAN 1st Test. However, both the openers departed early with low scores. Later in the IND vs BAN 1st Test, the hosts' innings were in the hands of Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill. Smashing 2 fours, Kohli looked quite promising but lost his wicket in an unfortunate way. In the Mehidy Hasan Miraz's over, the right-hander was given LBW. Following the matter, Virat Kohli walked towards Gill in order to review the decision but did not call for a DRS. Virat Kohli walked towards the pavilion with a score of 17 runs off 37 deliveries which was lced with 2 fours. Also Read: IN PHOTOS: Jasprit Bumrah becomes 10th Indian bowler to... The rest of the six Bangladesh wickets were equally shared by rookie Akash Deep (2/19), seasoned Ravindra Jadeja (2/19) and Mohammed Siraj (2/30). Lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah showed his prowess with the ball by snapping four wickets for 50 runs and played a crucial role in restricting Bangladesh to 149 runs in the IND vs BAN 1st Test.

Bumrah in lead role as India reduce Bangladesh to 112/8 at tea on Day 2

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah did the maximum damage as Indian bowlers knifed through the Bangladesh line-up to leave the visitors reeling at 112 for eight at tea on the second day of the first Test here on Friday. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was batting on 12 when tea was taken, and Bangladesh were still trailing by 264 runs. Bumrah claimed three wickets in his 6.5 overs, while Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah chipped in with two wickets apiece. India were bowled out for 376 in their first innings after resuming from the overnight 339 for six. It was clear that Bangladesh's confidence was dented after allowing India to build a substantial total from 144 for six, and the approach of their batters reflected it. With three wickets gone prior to the lunch for a mere 26 runs, Bangladesh needed some cricketing smarts to crawl out of the hole. Also Read: IND vs BAN 1st Test: Fans gather in huge numbers to cheer Team India But they did not show even an ounce of it, losing a further five wickets while adding 85 runs in the second passage in a little over 27 overs. The dismissals of Litton Das (22, 42 balls) and Shakib Al-Hasan (32, 64 balls) underlined it. They were looking comfortable in the middle during the course of their 51-run (94 balls) alliance for the sixth wicket. But Litton chose to play a rather needless uppish sweep off Jadeja (2/18) that was grabbed by substitute Dhruv Jurel, who came in for pacer Mohammed Siraj. Siraj left the field for a while to tend to cramps. Shakib's dismissal was even more bizarre. The vastly experienced left-hander went for a reverse sweep off Jadeja and the ball took a deflection off his boots en route to the big gloves of Rishabh Pant. Prior to that, Bangladesh also lost the wickets of skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (20) and Mushfiqur Rahim (8) to Siraj and Bumrah respectively as they slipped to deep trouble. Earlier in the first session, Ashwin (113) and Jadeja (86) departed after adding 199 runs, which came off 240 balls and 189 minutes, across three sessions. Pacer Taskin Ahmed (3/55) bowled better lines and returned with the wickets of Ashwin, Jadeja and Akash Deep. Fellow pacer Hasan Mahmud added a fifth wicket to his kitty in the form of Bumrah to bring curtains to the Indian innings. It was Mahmud's second successive fifer after bagging one against Pakistan at Rawalpindi earlier this month. After that feisty effort with the bat, India needed a fine beginning to sustain the momentum, and Bumrah provided it by dismissing Shadman Islam (2). Soon, Akash added the scalps of Zakir Hasan (3) and Mominul Haque (0) in successive balls to push Bangladesh into a spot of bother, as both the batters fatally played the wrong line. "You saw his magic just few months ago": Sarfaraz praises this Indian cricketer

India cricketer Sarfaraz Khan showered praise on star pacer Jasprit Bumrah and called him "one of the best" bowlers. Bumrah is in action during the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh, with the first Test at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. Speaking to Jio Cinema, Sarfaraz Khan recalled Bumrah's performance in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa and how the star pacer delivered for India by taking wickets. "You saw his magic just a few months ago in the T20 World Cup Final when the game was slipping out of our hands, and he delivered by taking a crucial wicket. He's done this so many times when the team is struggling. There's no doubt he's one of the best," Sarfaraz was quoted in a release from Jio Cinema as saying. Also Read: IND vs BAN 1st Test | "Seemed an inning without purpose": Former India cricketer on KL Rahul In 37 Tests, Bumrah has taken 159 wickets at an average of 20.69, with the best bowling figures of 6/27. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bowl in the Chennai Test, the first of the two-match series with India. India's top-order collapsed, and the team was struggling at 34/3. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (56 in 118 balls, with nine fours) and Rishabh Pant (39 in 52 balls, with six fours) stitched a 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket, bringing India into the game. But India were reduced to 144/6 and Ashwin and Jadeja (86* in 117 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes) stitched an unbeaten 195-run partnership, ending the day at 339/6. Ashwin is unbeaten after scoring a century. At stumps on day one, Ashwin stayed unbeaten on the crease after scoring 102 runs off 112 balls at a strike rate of 91.07. He slammed 10 fours and 2 sixes during his time on the crease. Hasan Mahmud (4/58) was the top bowler for Bangladesh, destroying the Indian top order, removing skipper Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0) and Virat Kohli (6). (With ANI Inputs)

"Seemed an inning without purpose": Former India cricketer on KL Rahul

Following the poor performance of KL Rahul in the IND vs BAN 1st Test, former Team India player Sanjay Manjrekar criticized him. In the IND vs BAN 1st Test, Rahul returned to the pavilion with a score of just 16 runs after facing 52 deliveries. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the man who claimed his wicket. "Completely understandable that they went for KL Rahul, It was just about experience, class, and recent form - the century in South Africa and an 80 in the only Test he played against England. But this is KL Rahul's story, It is amazing that he plays a brilliant innings at the Test level and the next two to three innings, it seems like he has got a pair in the last Test. Even when you saw him bat today, it almost seemed an inning without purpose," Manjrekar said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. Sanjay Manjrekar feels that KL Rahul has a temperament problem during his batting time following which he is failing to score runs in Test cricket. Also Read: IND vs BAN 1st Test | "Happy to take Virat Kohli out, because he is best batsman in the world": Hasan Mahmud "That is more of a temperamental problem with KL Rahul that has plagued him for 50 Test matches because the numbers that he has, while he has got some brilliant hundreds, an average of 34 with quite a few 100s in testing conditions tells you about his temperament, which we got a look at today as well," the former right-hand batter added. Recapping Day 1 of the IND vs BAN 1st Test, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bowl in the Chennai Test, the first of the two-match series with India. India's top-order collapsed, and the team was struggling at 34/3. Iyer fails again, but top-order ensures India ‘D’ post 306-5

The under-pressure Shreyas Iyer’s dismal run continued but strong performances from the other frontline batters, including Sanju Samson, guided India ‘D’ to 306-5 on the opening day of their Duleep Trophy match against India ‘B’ here on Thursday. Iyer, aiming to make a comeback to India’s Test squad, fell for a second successive duck in the ongoing tournament.  However, Devdutt Padikkal (50), Srikar Bharat (52), Ricky Bhui (56) and Samson (89 not out) smashed half-centuries as India ‘D’ batters produced a solid show. Also Read: Momentum has shifted in India’s favour: Hasan At stumps, Samson and Saransh Jain (26) were at the crease. The left-handed batter, who plays for Baroda in domestic cricket, got support only from Shams Mulani (44 off 76) after India ‘A’ were reduced to 36-5 in the 20th over. Momentum has shifted in India’s favour: Hasan

Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud, who dismissed India’s  Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill in the first session on Day One of the first Test here on Thursday, believes the momentum has shifted in favour of the hosts.  “I think in the morning, the ball zipped on the pitch. Later, the wicket got settled and the ball was coming on to the bat nicely. We [fast bowlers] were trying to dominate from morning, but the wicket has improved a lot now. So, we are trying to minimise the runs and the boundary,” Mahmud said at a press conference after the opening day. Also Read: Half-tons by Williamson, Latham take NZ to 255-4 “The momentum was with us at one point, but now it has shifted to the other side. Anything can happen. Tomorrow, we get another chance and we will try to work on it,” added the Mahmud, 24, who was born into a farmer’s family in a village near Chattogram. He was rated by South African pace great Allan Donald and former West Indies speedster Ottis Gibson as the best fast bowler to have come out of the country.  Both Donald and Gibson had been part of the team’s coaching staff in the past. Mahmud showed why he’s rated so highly during Bangladesh’s historic Test series sweep in Pakistan recently, and he did an encore on Thursday against a far better batting line-up.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Half-tons by Williamson, Latham take NZ to 255-4

Half-centuries from Tom Latham and Kane Williamson put New Zealand at 255-4 and in hot pursuit of Sri Lanka on Day Two of the first Test on Thursday.  The Black Caps trailed by 50 at stumps in Galle with Daryl Mitchell (41) and Tom Blundell (18) to resume in the morning. "Happy to take Kohli out, because he is best batsman in the world": Mahmud

It’s been a great last month for Bangladesh cricket. And for their fast-bowling fraternity. Twice in Rawalpindi against Pakistan, inspired by their inexperienced but impressively skilled pacers, Bangladesh found ways to escape from tight spots to carve out sensational victories. In the first Test, after Mushfiqur Rahim’s monumental 191 helped the visitors open up a first-innings lead of 117, they rode on early strikes from Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana and sustained success from spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz to send the hosts crashing to 146 all out and eventually completing a ten-wicket victory. A week later, Mahmud and Rana, both playing their respective third Tests, accounted for nine Pakistani second-innings wickets to orchestra another stunning collapse and set up a six-wicket triumph that helped them complete a historic 2-0 sweep on Pakistani soil. Skillful pace battery Hitherto largely a land of spin, Bangladesh are now putting together a pace attack capable of holding its own anywhere in the world. Two of their premier pacers, Shoriful and Ebadot Hossain, are out injured, yet Bangladesh summoned the depth to rattle India, reducing them to 144 for six on Day One of the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium until the hosts rallied to reach 339 without further damage on Thursday. Also Read: Fantashtic! The most impressive of the visiting quicks was Mahmud, not the quickest but definitely highly skillful. Presented with unusually favourable conditions—good bounce, rare moisture on live grass and considerable seam movement—he feasted on the uncertainty in the minds of India’s gun top-order to fire out Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant. Taskin off the boil Taskin Ahmed, the leader of the pace pack and the most experienced of the three, was a little off the boil, but Rana, who had arrived riding the wave of a hype for his extreme pace (145 kmph) and towering stature (six feet five inches) immediately showed what he is capable of. India were hopping and scrapping; there was none of the ‘fear’ Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha had alluded to two days back, but India were certainly given a wake-up call that R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja responded admirably to. “My plan was simple,” Mahmud, who ended the day with four for 58 from 18 terrific overs, said later.  “With the new ball, I was bowling to my strength. What I can do, I kept doing it all the time, and I got success with that. Whenever you take a wicket, it’s reason to be happy, doesn’t matter who the batsman is.  ‘Happy to dismiss Kohli’ But I was very happy to take him [Virat Kohli] out because he is the best batsman in the world currently.” More will certainly be heard of Mahmud and Rana, 24 and 21 respectively and with almost their entire cricketing lives ahead of them.
