Polish police yesterday said that they had detained 72 Russian football fans suspected of hooliganism as a preventative measure ahead of Saturday's Greece-Russia Euro 2012 match

The decision came after clashes erupted earlier in the week between Polish and Russia football fans ahead of the highly-charged 1-1 draw between co-hosts Poland and Russia, which saw a couple of dozen injuries and close to 200 arrests.

Greece went on to win 1-0 Saturday at the Warsaw National Stadium to qualify for the quarter-finals at the expense of Russia.

All 72 detainees were released a few hours later following identity checks, he added. Warsaw police recorded no incidents Saturday at the Greece-Russia match, in stark contrast to the Poland-Russia match on June 12, when clashes erupted between Russian and Polish hooligans in the worst violence seen so far at Euro 2012, where police arrested 184 hooligans.
