Former champions Payyade Sports Club beat Cricket Club of India (CCI) by five wickets in the Police Shield final at Police Gymkhana on Sunday.

It was Payyade SC’s third title after a gap of nine years.

CCI were restricted to 216-9 in the allotted 45 overs thanks to splendid bowling efforts from the Siddhesh Lad-led Payyade SC’s left-arm spinner Dhrumil Matkar (3-17) and pacer Badre Alam (2-65).

For the losing side, Alpesh Ramjani (57) and Saksham Parashar (56) tried their best but that was not sufficient to put up a fighting total.

Musheer Khan shines

In reply, riding on all-rounder Musheer Khan’s 75 and Raunaq Sharma’s unbeaten 48, Payyade SC chased down the target in just 37 overs.

DY Patil Sports Academy’s Shubham Ranjane was adjudged best batsman of the tournament, while Alam was declared best bowler. Young Musheer bagged four individual awards including the player of the tournament.

Lad, Aman in Mumbai team

Meanwhile, out-of-favour Lad and young Aman Khan have been included in the Mumbai squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy knockouts in Delhi.

Lad and Aman will replace skipper Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav as they are part of India’s upcoming T20I series against England.

“In the absence of Shreyas and Surya, we need somebody who is experienced and Siddhesh automatically walks in. Aman is also doing quite well,” Mumbai chief selector Salil Ankola told mid-day on Sunday.

Ankola has been admitted to hospital for COVID-19. He turns 53 today.
