Rishi Sunak delivered a powerful maiden speech as the leader of the opposition in the House of Commons on July 9. Sunak began his speech by congratulating newly elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer for his victory. He further said ‘sorry’ and apologised to his party members who were not re-elected. Sunak promised that his party would undertake their new role as the official opposition with professionalism, effectiveness, and humility. Addressing the parliament, Sunak said, “In our politics we can argue vigorously as I and Prime Minister did over the past six weeks but still respect each other. Amid the Israel-Iran conflict, tensions in the Middle East surged as Iran launched over 200 projectiles at Israel, purportedly in retaliation for a suspected Israeli strike on its consulate in Syria. Iran issued warnings of even stronger actions against Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel pledged both defensive and offensive responses, citing years of preparedness for direct Iranian aggression. Israel claimed to have successfully intercepted 99% of the 300 drones and missiles fired at them. Additionally, Israel urged the UN Security Council to promptly convene and designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the Iranian strike as a dangerous escalation and expressed intent to work with allies to de-escalate tensions, seeking meetings with G7 leaders. Amidst the deepening crisis in the Middle East, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other world leaders expressed solidarity with Israel. UN Chief António Guterres and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned the attack. The US and UK Armed Forces conducted strikes against 18 Houthi targets in Yemen. The attacks were backed by several Western nations including Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand. The strikes targeted areas used by the Houthis to attack international merchant vessels and naval ships in the region. For months, Houthi attack have been disrupting aid bound for Yemen harming Middle Eastern economies. Meanwhile, Houthi military on February 25 said that they targeted an American oil tanker in Gulf of Aden. Houthi Military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said their navy targeted the US-flagged, owned commercial ship, MV Torm Thor. Britain also released a video of Typhoon fighter jets and Voyager tanker aircraft in operation for joint military action against Houthis. The US and Britain have re-designated the Houthis as a terrorist group, after they began targeting commercial vessels.

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar in UK attended the repatriation ceremony of Yogini Chamunda and Yogini Gomukhi, the 8th-century stolen temple idols from Uttar Pradesh's Lokhari, in London on November 16. Dr S Jaishankar is on a five-day visit to the UK where he met with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak with an aim to review various aspects of bilateral ties. India and the UK have a "growing bilateral partnership", the MEA stated in a release, noting that the two countries launched a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021. India and the UK share a warm and thriving relationship. The India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership was launched in 2021 along with the India-UK Roadmap 2023. Significantly, India and the UK are negotiating a Free Trade Agreement. Talks for FTA between India and the UK started in 2022 and the 12th round of negotiations took place from August 8-31 this year.
