Maharashtra: Big setback to Sharad Pawar; NCP symbol goes to Ajit Pawar faction

In a big setback to the faction led by Sharad Pawar, the Election Commission on February 06 settled the dispute in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in favour of the faction led by the petitioner Ajit Pawar. Celebration took over at Ajit Pawar Camp, as EC settled dispute in NCP. The poll panel has given the NCP name and symbol to the faction led by Ajit Pawar in a significant decision that has a bearing on the forthcoming polls. The decision was taken after more than 10 hearings spread over more than six months. Maharashtra Dy CM and petitioner Ajit Pawar welcomed the decision and expressed gratitude to EC for the decision. Meanwhile, NCP Sharad Pawar Faction leader Supriya Sule alleged an “Adrishya Shakti” behind the EC’s decision. Shiva Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi called the development “Sponsored, planned and executed by Central Govt”. Notably, test of majority in legislative wing found favour in the circumstance of the case, where both groups have been found to be working outside party constitution and organizational elections.

BJP-led NDA holds meeting in Delhi; Ajit Pawar, Shinde mark their presence

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and NCP leader Praful Patel arrived in Delhi to attend the NDA meeting on July 18. On one hand, the Opposition with 26 parties held their meeting in Karnataka’s Bengaluru to corner BJP in the next year’s Lok Sabha Elections, on the other hand, the BJP with its 38 allies will be holding a meeting of the NDA in the national capital today. Commenting on Opposition’s meeting, Praful Patel said, "Everyone has the right to take decisions as per their political parties. Those meeting in Bengaluru will work as per they want and we will work as we want”. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde also arrived in Delhi to take part in the meeting of the BJP-led NDA.

NCP leader (Ajit Pawar faction) Praful Patel said that in 2022, it was clear that Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will collapse when Eknath Shinde had taken 40 MLAs to Surat and Guwahati.  Furthermore, he expressed his feelings towards NCP chief Sharad Pawar and said, “He is our mentor and guru, we will always respect and regard him and his position, he is a father figure to all of us.” He said, “In 2022, when Eknath Shinde had taken 40 MLAs to Surat and Guwahati, it was sure the MVA govt will collapse, as a consequence, there were 51 MLAs of the NCP who at that time, clearly felt that we should be part of the govt... there is no ideological difference, if we have gone with Shiv Sena, then we can definitely go with the BJP. Sharad Pawar is our mentor and Guru...we will always respect and regard him and his position, he is a father figure to all of us. We are using his picture not out of disrespect, but we are showing our reverence towards him”.

Sharad Pawar announces Supriya Sule, Praful Patel as NCP working presidents

Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, and NCP Vice-President Praful Patel have been declared as working presidents of the party. Sharad Pawar made the announcement at the 25th anniversary of the party, founded by him and P A Sangma in 1999. After the announcement was made, Supriya Sule said she was deeply grateful to the party, adding that she is determined to justify the trust reposed in her by the party. The Nationalist Congress Party completed 25 years today and a special event was organised in Mumbai on the occasion. Sharad Pawar had last month offered to resign from the presidency of the party, which was followed by fervent remonstrations from the party members as well as other political leaders. An NCP panel formed to deliberate on Mr Pawar's offer had on May 5 rejected his resignation and urged him to continue as the party president.

Three days after announcing that he was stepping down as the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), veteran leader Sharad Pawar Friday withdrew his decision after a 18-member committee of senior party leaders, unanimously rejected his resignation. Pawar at a press conference announced his decision. His daughter and Baramati MP Supriya Sule, Maharashtra NCP chief Jayant Patil and senior party leader Praful Patel were among those present at the press meet. Incidentally, Pawar’s nephew and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ajit Pawar was absent. NCP leader Praful Patel had briefed the media about the committee’s decision to reject Mr. Pawar’s decision. Workers who had gathered outside the NCP headquarters since early morning celebrated the committee’s decision by bursting crackers and chanting slogans.
