Monsoon 2025 hits Kerala coast eight days before schedule

Monsoon 2025 has arrived in India eight days before the schedule. Early rains drenched the coast of Kerala announcing the arrival of monsoon. This is the earliest date of the monsoon onset over Kerala after the year 2009 when it set in over the southern state on May 23. According to IMD, the Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of south Arabian Sea, some parts of the west-central and east-central Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep area, Kerala, Mahe, some parts of Karnataka, remaining parts of Maldives and Comorin area, many parts of Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of southwest and east-central Bay of Bengal, some parts of west-central and north Bay of Bengal, and some parts of Mizoram on Saturday, May 24.

Mumbai Rains: Road works deadline set for May 31

With the monsoon around the corner, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a firm directive to complete all ongoing cement concrete road works by May 31 to ensure that roads are safe and traffic-ready in Mumbai. The India Meteorological Department has predicted thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rainfall across various states. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region continues to be on yellow alert until May 24. This region is set to experience thunderstorms followed by lightning, moderate rainfall and gusty winds at a speed of 40 to 50 km/hr in isolated regions.

Chaos ensued on the night of 20th May as unseasonal rains pounded the city in mid-May - weeks ahead of the scheduled Monsoon. Mumbaikars were caught off guard as heavy rains caused traffic disruption, flooding and collapse of the infrastructure. Between 8 to 9 PM, Western Mumbai recorded intense rainfall — with the Eksar Municipal School area in Borivali topping the charts at 61 mm in just one hour, according to the BMC.

On 3rd August, Mumbai witnessed severe rainfall which led to massive waterlogging and traffic snarls across the city. IMD had predicted that Mumbai would likely receive heavy rainfall at isolated places for three days starting Friday 2nd August along with heavy rainfall at isolated areas in Thane.
