Marxist-leaning Aruna Dissanayake becomes new Sri Lankan President

Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the Janatha Vimukthi Peremuna party has emerged as Sri Lanka's new President, securing a landslide victory with 42.3% of the votes in the country’s first presidential election following the 2022 economic crisis. His election marks a significant shift, as he defeated established politicians, including Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Dissanayake on X, expressing eagerness to collaborate on strengthening multifaceted cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. Dissanayake, who is not from a traditional political background, called for unity among Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, and all Sri Lankans in his victory message. This election follows the mass protests that forced former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign, leading to Wickremesinghe’s brief presidency. Dissanayake’s leadership is seen as a potential turning point for the nation as it seeks to recover from its recent turmoil.

Ahead of Lok Sabha elections 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public rally in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore. While addressing the meeting, he hit out at Congress, DMK over ‘Katchatheevu’ row and said that the whole country is discussing another hypocrisy of Congress and DMK party.“Today the whole country is discussing another hypocrisy of Congress and the DMK party. When Congress was in government, these people gave Kachchatheevu Island to Sri Lanka. In which cabinet was this decision taken? For whose benefit was this decision taken? Congress is silent on this. Thousands of fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been arrested for going near that island...NDA government is continuously releasing such fishermen and bringing them back. Not only this, five fishermen were given death sentences but I brought them back alive. DMK and Congress are not only the culprits of the fishermen but also the culprits of the country,” said PM Modi.

ICC World Cup 2023: Inside the controversy of Angelo Mathews ‘timed out’

Former Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews became the first cricketer in history to be dismissed on account of ‘time out’. Controversy erupted after his dismissal which happened during 2023 Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka match of ICC World Cup 2023. Sri Lanka was 135-4 in the 25th over and Samarawickrama had just lost his wicket at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Angelo took his time striding out to the crease and arrived to take strike after the stipulated two-minute mark. He ate up more time as he complained of an issue with the strap of his helmet, prompting the umpires to have a word with him. That is when Bangladesh skipper Shakib-al-Hassan appealed for a ‘time-out’. Mathews was also seen having a discussion with Shakib but the latter did not withdraw his appeal. According to rule 40.1.1 of ICC, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement.” Mathews’ helmet strap came off and it took over 2 minutes, therefore he had to be sent back to pavilion following the appeal.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister’s blistering attack on Justin Trudeau’s allegation

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry launched a scathing attack on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his allegations against India. Sabry said that some of the terrorists have found safe haven in Canada. "Some of the terrorists have found safe haven in Canada. The Canadian PM has this way of just coming out with some outrageous allegations without any supporting proof. The same thing they did for Sri Lanka, a terrible, total lie about saying that Sri Lanka had a genocide. Everybody knows there was no genocide in our country. I saw yesterday he had gone and given a rousing welcome to somebody who have associated with the Nazis in the past during the Second World War. So this is questionable and we have dealt with it in the past. I am not surprised that sometimes PM Trudeau comes out with outrageous and substantiated allegations," he said.
