The G20 Leaders’ Summit 2023 kicked off at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 09. As the world leaders arrived at the ‘state-of-the-art’ venue, PM Narendra Modi welcomed them. India is hosting the G20 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for September 09 and 10, under its Presidency.

PM Modi-Prez Putin hold telephonic conversation ahead of G20 meet; Delhi lit up

Days ahead of the G20 summit in Delhi, PM Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation on Aug 28 with Russian President Vladimir Putin. President Putin conveyed his inability to attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi. He informed that Russia would be represented by its Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. PM Modi and Prez Putin also exchanged their views on regional and global issues of mutual concern. Notably, PM Modi thanked President Putin for consistent support for all initiatives under India’s G20 Presidency. The two leaders agreed to remain in touch. Meanwhile, several areas of the national capital lit up on August 28 ahead of the upcoming G20 Summit. The G20 Summit is being organised in Delhi from September 9-10. Many heads of state and diplomats including US President Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to be attending the G20 Leaders' Summit. The Delhi government has issued a notification for public holiday on September 8, 9 and 10, in view of the G-20 Summit scheduled to be held in the national capital on those dates.

These Two Great Nations Should Be Friends: Russian FM Lavrov

The G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting has proved to be a significant event for India-China relations. Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang visited India for the first time after Tawang clash. EAM S Jaishankar also held a detailed bilateral meeting with his Chinese Counterpart. The leaders discussed current challenges, bilateral relationships and peace in the border areas. The G20FMM was also a test for Beijing’s balancing act between the US-led West and Russia in the midst of Ukraine crisis. India had also hosted US’ Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Now, Russia has called for betterment in India-China relations amidst troubled situations at the border. Addressing the audience at Raisina Dialogue, Lavrov batted for improvement in India-China relations. He also talked about RIC (Russia-India –China), for which was initiated by his predecessor Yevgeny Primakov. Amid polarizing war, the divide between West and Russia-China came to the fore at G20 event. While there was no joint statement, India has managed to bring world leaders closer to consensus. Both US and Russia have lauded India for its stance on war, which calls for “a cessation of hostilities, return to dialogue”.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrives in India; Supports India

Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov landed in New Delhi on March 01 to attend the two-day meeting of the G20 Foreign Ministers which is scheduled to take place on March 01 and March 02. According to sources, India is looking forward to have discussions on issues like climate change and the debt on developing countries in the meeting between the Foreign Ministers. The New Delhi meeting will also be attended by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang. In all, representatives of 40 countries, including non-G20 members invited by India, and multilateral organisations will also attend the meeting.
