The video shows a group of men attacking Haji Ashraf Munyar, accusing him of carrying beef. The incident occurred near Igatpuri in Nashik district as Munyar was traveling from Jalgaon to his daughter’s home in Kalyan, near Mumbai. The attackers are seen abusing and repeatedly slapping Munyar while questioning him about the meat he was carrying. They kicked him, abused him, and recorded a video of the assault and shared it on social media where it became viral. The Government Railway Police in Thane filed a first information report on August 31, leading to the arrest of three suspects. However, they were subsequently released on bail. The incident, which took place on August 28, has drawn significant criticism, with many calling for stringent action against those responsible. Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde reacted to the brutal incident.

After a clash was reported from Mumbai's Mira Road, bulldozers razed illegal structures and encroachments in the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road on Tuesday. "Illegal structures and encroachments were razed by bulldozers in the Naya Nagar area of Mira Road where Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha celebrations were stone pelted. After instructions from the Maharashtra government, action is being taken by the Municipal Corporation with the help of the police," the Maharashtra government said. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on June 25 hit back at former US President Barack Obama. In an interview with CNN, Barack Obama said that India must protect its minorities, or it would ‘pull apart’. “If I had a conversation with PM Modi who I know well, part of my argument would be that if you do not protect the rights of ethnic minorities in India, then there is a strong possibility that India at some point starts pulling apart. We have seen what happens when you start getting those kind of large internal conflicts,” Former US President Barack Obama had said in an interview with CNN. To his comments, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman retaliated and gave a scathing reply.

A recent report by Pew Research Center claimed that 98% of India’s Muslims are free to practice their religion in the nation. The remaining 2% said they were “not too free” to practice their religion, with virtually no one answering “not at all free”. As per its website, Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that talks about the issues, attitudes, trends shaping the world. In an Opinion piece by Washington Examiner, American Sociologist Salvatore Babones quoted this info from Pew Research. He compared the situation of minorities in India and the US, from where several reports questioning India’s democracy are published. Notably, US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) in its annual report proposed to blacklist India. USCIRF recommended 17 countries (including India) to the State Department to be designated as ‘Countries of Particular Concern’. As per Pew Research Center’s survey, 95% of Muslims said that they were “proud to be Indian”.
