Some dishes are bound to make the common man stutter, “why?” Why, indeed. While it might not make the list for dishes to try when in Mexico, Mercado República in the city of San Luis Potosí sells an insane rat broth. The place is the only one left that still offers rat meat based dishes. Their offerings include both raw rats and rodent broth cooked with a variety of vegetables and spices. Priced at Rs 480, each bowl has a whole field rat.

Historically, rat meat based delicacies have a been in Mexican menus
The last rat broth seller, José Remedios Hernández, also called Camilo, inherited this bizarre tradition from his mother, who recently passed away and he doesn’t plan on giving up the family business. Operating for more than half a century, Camilo has no wish to shut down. While in India, the FSSAI might come knocking on your doors if you start cooking up this dish, in 2017, Mexican politicians wished to restore the recipe to the menu. According to The Guardian, Guadalupe Flores, of the Zacatecas state legislature, wanted to “demystify the consumption of field rats” by encouraging people to “eat caldo de rata” (rat soup).
From diabetes to arthritis, rat broth was the one-stop cure-all for every ailment one could encounter. Flores even stated that rats are clean animals. The rats found in Camilo’s broth come from the countryside surrounding communities and municipalities around San Luis Potosí and boast great nutritional values, even said to increase appetites. One can either choose to buy the cooked meal, or raw rats for Rs 430, which Camilo suggests turn out the best when prepared with vegetables and condiments that compliment the meat’s flavour.
