The Biden administration has indicated that it is still undecided on ending the Trump-era ban on issuing new H-1B visas, with the Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas asserting that the US government’s top priority is the acute needs of individuals fleeing persecution.

The H-1B visa, the most sought after among Indian IT professionals, is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. Technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China. In January, then-President Donald Trump had extended the ban on issuing new H-1B visas till March 31, arguing that the country is having a very high unemployment rate and the US cannot afford to have more foreign workers.

“What is the status of the review of the Trump era visa bans for H1B visas and has the White House decided to lift those bans before they expire at the end of the month?” Mayorkas was asked at a White House news conference on Monday.

“I don’t really (know) - I hate to end the questioning on a question. The answer to which I am not certain. But this goes to what preceded us. We have so much work to do to repair and to restore and to rebuild that we have a prioritisation matrix and of course, the acute needs of individuals fleeing persecution is a high priority. Which brings me to this meeting this morning,” Mayorkas said.

US to let migrant families reunite
President Joe Biden’s administration will allow migrant families separated at the US-Mexico border under former President Donald Trump to reunite inside the US, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said. “We are hoping to reunite the families either here or in their country of origin. We hope to be in a position to give them the election and if in fact they seek to reunite here in the US, we will explore lawful pathways for them to remain in the US and to address the family needs,” Mayorkas said in a White House briefing on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported.
