The US and Israel are among the nine countries that opposed the United Nations charter to make Palestine, which has observer status, a full member.  While shredding the copy of the Charter, Israeli ambassador Gilad Erdan denounced the resolution and called it a clear violation of its regulations. The incident occurred when the UN General Assembly, by a wide margin of 143-9, approved the Arab and Palestinian-backed resolution granting new “rights and privileges” to Palestine, on Friday.

The vote reflected wide global support for full membership of Palestine in the UN, with several countries expressing outrage at the escalating death toll in Gaza and the major Israeli offensive in Rafah in the past week. While the resolution gives Palestine some new rights, it reaffirms that it remains a non-member observer state. The US informed that it will block Palestinian membership and statehood until negotiations with Israel resolve issues, including security, boundaries, and the future of Jerusalem.
