At least four people are reportedly dead after a building fall in the eastern province of Anhui, China according to Chinese state media.

A portion of the 10-unit apartment tower in Tongling collapsed on top of its residents just after midday on Monday, sparking an all-day hunt for survivors. According to state channel CCTV, a 12-year-old girl was discovered alive and is receiving emergency care.

Backhoes and cranes were brought in to stabilise the remaining portions of the structure. The cause of the collapse was not immediately known, however, CCTV said that the city had just seen days of intense rain, which submerged subsurface infrastructure.

As buildings constructed fast during the economic boom of the 1980s and 1990s begin to age, poor construction quality and unlawful extensions and changes are becoming more and more obvious.
