Kate Middleton was back where it all began yesterday visiting St Andrews, Scotland, with her fiance Prince William.

Sporting a bright red suit to match the famous formal gowns of the students, the royal couple were provided a "welcome home" by Sir Menzies Campbell, the chancellor of their alma mater.

Saying the college is always proud of its former students, Campbell said, "We take particular pride in both of you."

"This is a very special moment for Catherine and me. It feels like coming home," William said in the university's quadrangle, where 600 guests had gathered to mark the prince's role as patron of the university's 600th appeal.

The couple, who studied for four years in the romantic university town, also toured their old Art History lecture hall and took a walk past the halls of residence where they both lived as freshmen in their student year of 2001-2002.

At the end of the ceremony on the quad, some 3,000 well-wishers greeted them along North Street.
William and Kate also received an early wedding present: a scholarship established by the college in their honour. It will be worth more than $100,000

(Rs 46 lakh) and go toward future students' tuition fees and accommodation. The scholarship will be open to students of all nationalities and will be awarded annually.

"We wish them a life of love, health and happiness," added principal of the university Louise Richardson.
