Two killed, seven injured, in shooting at Tel Aviv bar: Israeli police

Jerusalem: Two people were killed and at least five others wounded when an unidentified gunman opened fire at a bar in central Tel Aviv on Friday, Israeli police said. It was not immediately clear if the attacker was Palestinian or if it was a gangland shooting.

Medics said they had taken seven people to hospitals in Tel Aviv, with police saying two of them had been pronounced dead.

A suspect apparently opened fire at people in a bar, but the motive was still unclear, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement.

According to sources, two of the injured were in serious condition and three were stated to be out of danger, Haaretz daily reported.

Police detained a suspect near the site of the shooting, after the shooter fled the scene of the attack, but were continuing to search the area.

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said that at this stage the municipality had "no special instructions" and asked the public to enable the security services to do their work.

An eyewitness to the shooting spoke of only one shooter, who he described as "light-skinned and not Eastern looking", carrying an M-16 rifle.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said five people were wounded in the shooting this afternoon. He said police were
investigating the attack and that it is not immediately clear who was behind it.

"Police units searching Tel Aviv area for suspect who carried out shooting. All injured taken to Tel Aviv hospitals," Rosenfeld wrote on Twitter.

The attack comes amid more than three months of almost daily Palestinian attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers.

Channel 10 reported that local businesses shut as the gunman might have escaped. Large police forces arrived at the scene, located on a main Tel Aviv street.
