The duo was nabbed from Wadala area of central Mumbai on Tuesday. Acting on a tip off that a person named Yakub and his associate would come to Wadala with weapons, ATS laid a trap. Two persons, who were spotted moving suspiciously in the area, were caught by ATS, the official told PTI.

"Five rifles, 17 live cartridges, two mobile phones, 8 fake firearms licences and a rubber stamp, among other things, were recovered from the two, Yakub Abdul Rauf (43) and Jamaal Hussain Amir Hussain (34)," he said.

The next day, Yakub's house in Wadala was searched where one more rifle, nine cartridges and four bogus weapon licences were recovered, the official said. The two were produced before a Metropolitan Magistrate Court, which remanded them in ATS custody till August 19.

During interrogation, the accused, originally from Assam, said they had procured the weapons from Jammu and Kashmir and wanted to sell them in Mumbai for anything between Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000 apiece.

They would get hold of genuine weapon licences of people looking for job in private security sector in Mumbai and use them to prepare fake ones, the ATS officer said. The fake arms documents were shown to have been issued by Nagaland authorities.

Yakub and Jamaal were booked under IPC Sections 465 (forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 472 (making or possessing counterfeit seal, etc.), 419 (punishment for cheating by personation) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and relevant sections of the Arms Act, police said, adding further probe was on.
