A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of New Caledonia today in the tectonically active Pacific region, the US Geological Survey said
An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck in the Pacific Ocean 42 miles (67 km) east-northeast of Tadine in New Caledonia's Loyalty Islands, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Sunday.

The quake, whose depth was 12.8 miles, occurred just hours after a 6.4 tremor 46 miles east of the Loyalty Islands.
