Prince William rescues teen from drowning

Prince William led the life-saving rescue of two teenage girls swept out to sea off the Anglesey coast yesterday.

The 16 and 13-year-olds were winched to safety off Cymyran Beach, Rhosneigr by a helicopter captained by the prince.

William and his team from RAF Valley rushed to help the girls who were described as “exhausted” and in danger after being caught on a riptide while body-boarding.


They were both taken to Ysbysty Gwynedd in Bangor after the incident, and the RAF said the 16-year-old told the crew winchman she thought it was all over as she sank beneath the waves.u00a0Winchman, Master Aircrew Harry Harrison said, “When I got to her, the elder girl was clearly exhausted and was going under the water for what was the very last time. We never know what we’ll face when we’re called out.”

He added, “Sometimesu00a0it’s just a twisted ankle or a broken bone, but this was one rescue where we truly did arrive in the nick of time and managed to save two young lives.”u00a0Prince William qualified as a Search and Rescue pilot in September 2010 and only gained his captaincy with the RAF in June.

Fl Lt ‘Schmoo’ Smith,u00a0co-pilot, said, “This was a remarkably swift rescue,u00a0taking around 38 seconds from take-off until we arrived on scene.”
