The former Manchester United star and his Galaxy team mates visited Obama’s official residence where the president congratulated them on their third Major League Soccer Cup victory.
However, Obama couldn’t resist the opportunity to have some fun at the expense of Beckham, delivering a series of jokes with perfect comic timing.
After paying tribute to one of the ‘most talented line-ups the MLS has ever seen’, Obama cracked a joke about a ‘young up and comer on the team — a guy named David Beckham’.u00a0“I have to say I gave David a hard time. I said half his team mates could be his kids,” he continued.
“We’re getting old, David, though you’re holding up better than me. Last year, at the age of 36, David had his best year at MLS, leading the team with 15 assists,” he added.
“He did it despite fracturing his spine halfway through the season, injuring his hamstring a week before the championship game.u00a0He is tough. In fact, it’s a rare man who can be that tough on the field and also have his own line of underwear. David Beckham is that man.”
The president had Beckham and his team-mates, including former Tottenham star Robbie Keane, in hysterics. They later presented Obama with a signed Galaxy football and his very own jersey.
