Haneef sues Australian government

The man in the middle of one of Australia's worst national security bungles, Mohamed Haneef, is taking the Australian government to court over his arrest for 25 days on terrorism charges.

Dr Haneef's lawyers, Maurice Blackburn, lodged the suit in the Queensland Supreme Court in Brisbane yesterday.

Dr Haneef is not only running a case for unlawful arrest and abuse of power against the government, but has also brought a defamation action against the former immigration minister, Kevin Andrews.

The Indian-born doctor was arrested on July 2, 2007, at Brisbane airport, only days after an attempted terrorist attack on Glasgow's international airport. His mobile phone SIM card was linked to one of the attackers.

He was held for 12 days before being charged with recklessly giving support to a terrorist organisation. The terrorism charge was later dropped.

"It has done great damage to my reputation," Dr Haneef said.
