Two deadly mishaps at seperate locations, involving an airline crash and a freight train derailement which caused a tanker blast claimed more than 160 lives on Tuesday.

While au00a0Yemen Airways passenger plane with 150 people on board crashed in the Indian Ocean island of Comoros early on Tuesday, at least 10 people were killed and 50 injured after a freight train derailed and two railway cars filled with liquid gas exploded at a station in the Tuscan port city of Viareggio in Italy.

Yemen Airways crash
"The plane crashed in the sea 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled time of arrival in Moroni," the official told DPA.

"We have no information whether there are any survivors," he said. The 150 people on board Yemen Airways flight IY 628 included passengers and crew.

The Airbus 310 plane was flying from Yemen capital Sana'a to Comoros. A company official said that most of the passengers were expatriates from Comoros who were in transit from Paris.

Comoros is located off the eastern coast of Africa between Madagascar and Mozambique.

Freight train mishap
Fire officials said the carsu00a0 with the gas tankers derailed and exploded shortly after midnight, and the flames spread rapidly to engulf a nearby road and 10 houses.

Witnesses said the explosion was "like a bomb". At least 35 people suffered serious burns.

Some houses in the area were evacuated and five buildings reportedly collapsed with the force of the explosion.

Firefighters combing the vicinity found one child still alive in the rubble. As many as 300 firefighters were involved in the rescue efforts.

Their search was being made more difficult by the threat that other derailed gas tankers could explode.

Officials were still to determine the cause of the accident.

The Italian state railway company said no trains had collided but said material fatigue in the exploded tanker was a possible cause.

The explosion occurred after a 14-car train coming from La Spezia its way to Pisa passed through the station.
