Floodwaters swamp West and Central Africa regions

Houses swept away to the very last brick. Inmates frantically fleeing the city’s main prison as its walls got washed away by water rising from an overflowing dam. Corpses of crocodiles and snakes floating among human bodies on main streets. As torrential rains across Central and West Africa have unleashed the most catastrophic floods in decades, residents of Maiduguri, the capital of the fragile Nigerian state of Borno—which has been at the center of an Islamic extremists’ insurgency—said they have seen it all. The floods, which have killed more than 1,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands, have worsened existing humanitarian crises in the countries which have been impacted the most: Chad, Nigeria, Mali and Niger. Over 4 million people have been affected by flooding so far this year in West Africa, a threefold increase from last year, according to the UN. With rescue operations still underway, it is impossible to give an accurate count of lives lost in the water. So far, at least 230 were reported dead in Nigeria, 265 in Niger, 487 in Chad and 55 in Mali. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Taking landfall on Thursday night, Typhoon Pulasan brought maximum winds of 83 kmph. Many regions experienced flooding. The city evacuated around 1,12,000 residents, as ferry and train services were temporarily suspended. No casualties were reported so far. Israel had warned US of Lebanon operation: Officials

Israel had warned US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin in a call Tuesday that a military operation was going to take place in Lebanon but gave no details, US officials said on Thursday. The day of the call, in an attack widely blamed on Israel, thousands of pagers belonging to Hezbollah militants exploded. The call was one of four between Austin and Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant this week as attacks have spiked between Israel and Hezbollah. The two spoke again later Tuesday, and the US has acknowledged being briefed following the attack. There was another call Wednesday, and they also spoke Sunday, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, to discuss private talks. Officials said the US didn’t get an advance warning of the second wave of attacks, targeting walkie-talkies. ‘Lifeless bodies thrown down’ Israeli soldiers pushed three apparently lifeless bodies from rooftops during a raid in the northern part of the occupied West Bank on Thursday, according to an Associated Press journalist at the scene and video obtained by AP. An AP journalist in the town of Qabatiya witnessed three soldiers push the bodies off the roofs of adjacent multi-story buildings, sending them falling out of view. It was the latest in a series of suspected violations by Israeli forces since the start of the Israel-Hamas war that rights groups say show a pattern of excessive force toward Palestinians. Israel strikes more Hezbollah sites  Israel Air Force fighter jets Thursday night attacked about 30 rocket launchers and military infrastructures of the terrorist organization Hezbollah in Lebanon, which contained about 150 launch canisters (each rocket launcher has multiple such canisters) intended for immediate launch towards the territory of Israel. In addition, military buildings were attacked alongside the organization’s munitions warehouse in several areas in southern Lebanon.  IDF warns residents in border region The IDF has issued on Thursday night direct instructions to residents in northern Israel for the first time since the war began, bypassing the usual channel of local authorities. Following an updated situation assessment, residents of Merom Galil, Upper Galilee, Mevo’ot Hermon, Yesod HaMa’ala, Hazor, Rosh Pina, Safed, Metula, and northern Golan communities have been advised to limit movements, avoid gatherings, secure village gates, and stay near protected areas. Hezbollah hits northern Israel with 140 rockets, new rise to West Asia conflict

Hezbollah attacked the northern part of Israel with 140 rockets on Friday, the attack came after the militant group's leader Hassan Nasrallah vowed to retaliate against Israel for their mass bombing attack, the Israeli military and the militant group said to AP.  According to Israel's military, the missiles struck locations along the severely damaged border with Lebanon in three waves on Friday afternoon, AP reported. Hezbollah claimed to have used Katyusha rockets to attack a number of locations along the border, including various air defense bases and the Israeli armored brigade's headquarters, which they claimed to have hit for the first time. They said to AP that the rockets were fired in reply to the Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon's villages and homes. Hezbollah and the Lebanese government have accused Israel of carrying out the horrific pager attack on Tuesday, which killed at least nine people and injured nearly 3,000 others. The attack included the simultaneous explosion of pagers used by Hezbollah members. Israel’s defense minister had declared the start of a “new phase” of the war as Israel turned its focus towards the northern front against Hezbollah militants based in Lebanon.  “We are at the start of a new phase in the war—it requires courage, determination and perseverance,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told troops on September 18.  The apparent Israeli attack targeting pagers used by Hezbollah had killed at least 12 and wounded nearly 3,000 on September 17. The next day, exploding walkie-talkies and other electronics across Lebanon that killed at least 20 people and injured 450 others. The head of Hezbollah’s Executive Council promised the group would respond to Tuesday’s (September 17) pager explosion attack with “special punishment”. According to the AP report, the incident comes as tensions between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah continue to grow, with both sides exchanging fire since last October's Gaza war. On Thursday, the Israel Air Force fighter attacked about 30 rocket launchers and military infrastructures of the terrorist organization Hezbollah in Lebanon, which contained about 150 launch canisters (each rocket launcher has multiple such canisters) intended for immediate launch towards the territory of Israel. About 30 launchers and 150 nests, military infrastructure, military buildings and a weapons warehouse: the IDF continues to attack Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. Israel Air Force fighter jets Thursday night attacked about 30 rocket launchers and military infrastructures of the terrorist organization Hezbollah in Lebanon, which contained about 150 launch canisters (each rocket launcher has multiple such canisters) intended for immediate launch towards the territory of Israel. In addition, military buildings were attacked alongside the organization's munitions warehouse in several areas in southern Lebanon. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) also attacked with artillery fire in the Naqoura area of southern Lebanon. North Korea bolstering nukes, weapon stockpiles

North Korea said Thursday that leader Kim Jong Un supervised successful tests of two types of missiles—one designed to carry a “super-large conventional warhead” and the other likely for a nuclear warhead, as he ordered officials to bolster up his country’s military capabilities to repel United States-led threats. The tests appear to be the same as the multiple missile launches that neighboring countries said North Korea performed Wednesday, extending its run of weapons displays as confrontations with the US and South Korea escalate. The official Korean Central News Agency said Kim oversaw the launch of the country’s newly built Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5 ballistic missile tipped with a dummy “4.5-ton super-large conventional warhead”. The test-firing was meant to verify an ability to hit a 320 km-range target, suggesting it’s a weapon aimed at striking sites in South Korea. Israel turns focus toward Lebanon and Hezbollah

Israel’s defense minister has declared the start of a “new phase” of the war as Israel turns its focus toward the northern front against Hezbollah militants based in Lebanon. Two waves of explosive attacks hit Syria and Lebanon: an apparent Israeli attack targeting pagers used by Hezbollah that killed at least 12 and wounded nearly 3,000 on Tuesday, and exploding walkie-talkies and other electronics Wednesday across Lebanon that killed at least 20 people and injured 450 others. “We are at the start of a new phase in the war—it requires courage, determination and perseverance,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told troops on Wednesday. The head of Hezbollah’s Executive Council promised the group would respond to Tuesday’s pager explosion attack with “special punishment”. Japanese firm says walkie-talkies with its logo were discontinued years ago The remains of an exploded radio device. PIC/AFP Japanese wireless communication equipment-maker Icom says it cannot confirm whether a walkie-talkie used in the explosive attacks against Hezbollah was related to the company, noting that the production and sales of that device and its battery were discontinued about a decade ago. The Osaka-based Icom was responding Thursday to a report that said one of the walkie-talkies used in the attacks a day earlier had a sticker with the company’s logo. Icom also noted that the device in question did not have an anti-counterfeit hologram sticker, which all authentic Icom products should be carrying. Indian-origin man fined for cussing at police officers, doctor in Singapore

An Indian-origin man was fined SGD7,000 for having hurled vulgarities at a security officer, police officers, and a doctor who was treating him at a hospital. Mohanarajan Mohan, 30, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to two charges under the Protection from Harassment Act, as reported by The Straits Times. State Prosecuting Officer A Majeed Yosuff said that on April 14, Mohanarajan was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital in an unconscious state. As he was being examined by a doctor at the hospitals accident and emergency (A&E) department, he woke up. The prosecutor said Mohanarajan, who was drunk, insisted on being discharged and began verbally abusing the doctor and the staff. When an auxiliary police officer arrived and tried to calm him down, Mohanarajan shouted vulgarities at him too. As Mohanarajan was escorted out of the A&E department, he continued yelling at the auxiliary police officer. Outside, two police officers who were called to the scene approached Mohanarajan to speak to him. However, he shouted at one of the officers and said: "By law, I am not inside the hospital, right? Can you guys leave me alone?" When more police officers arrived, he allegedly verbally abused them too and was subsequently arrested. While in the police car, he continued to verbally abuse the officers, and kicked the interior of the vehicle repeatedly despite being told not to, said the prosecutor. In mitigation, Mohanarajan, who was unrepresented, said he was going through a divorce at the time of his offences, and was stressed and depressed. "I am very remorseful for what I did, and I do not want to repeat these offences because I respect Singapore's law and regulations," The Straits Times quoted him as pleading. He sought leniency from the judge, adding, he is attending counselling sessions as well as pursuing a diploma. In sentencing, District Judge Sandra Looi told Mohanarajan: "I am heartened to hear that you are pursuing education and are determined to never be in a similar state as you are in today again." She added: "We seek your and our community's understanding that our public service officers who serve our society deserve our utmost respect. That I am sure we all will agree."
