There cannot be an excuse for causing someone’s death

A case has been registered under IPC section 304 against the unidentified driver

Two bike-borne youth lost their lives after crashing into a car that took a sudden U-turn on a flyover, a report in this paper said.

Details said that the incident took place near Senapati Bapat Marg in Lower Parel.

The rider and pillion were severely injured at first, while the driver of the car sped away. The incident has been captured on CCTV.

Even as the families must be steeped in grief, it is shocking that a car takes a U-turn on a flyover. Drivers do know that one cannot take a U-turn on a flyover, that is extremely dangerous not just to others but to themselves, too.

This time it was a bike, it could have been a heavy vehicle if they are allowed on the bridge or a big car that could have crashed into the car taking a turn and this time, it would be the errant driver who could have been injured or killed.

There could have also been a pile-up of vehicles, that could have seen more grievous injuries and perhaps, even fatalities.

A driver knows taking a sudden turn in this way is extremely dangerous. Vehicles are usually crossing at some speed on these bridges. There is signage stating one cannot turn like this, on these bridges.

This also shows us the importance of surveillance, it is the cameras that show how the accident took place. It will be cameras that play a very vital role, in identifying the car number and subsequently, the driver.

This is why it is absolutely imperative that you have cameras. They should work and the footage should be extremely sharp.

Quality should be top notch; hence one should not be satisfied with simply ‘covering’ the city with surveillance cameras, but the kind of surveillance should be
priority, too.
