Railways must take passengers’ complaints seriously

Torn seats and missing armrests on the Flying Ranee

The new Flying Ranee express train running between Mumbai and Surat has shocked passengers. Substantial numbers of commuters claimed the train was an old one, with worn-out seats, broken armrests and other problems. They questioned how the minister of railways had flagged off a second-hand train.

One commuter had stated that the coaches were crowded and dirty and  the seats were broken. A report cited sources as saying that the train was earlier with the Central Railway and was used on the Mumbai-Manmad route as the Panchavati Express a few years ago.

A commuter stated that  approximately 400 armrests were missing from the rake. Station Consultative Committee members from Palghar also approached Member of Parliament Rajendra Gavit with the issue.  Western Railway officials though claimed in the report that just a couple of seats were torn and were attended to while no passengers were inconvenienced.

The Railways needs to address this double quick. Torn seats and missing armrests, need immediate attention. There were some complaints about leakages, which require quick remedial action in the monsoon. Officials must also look into claims about overcrowding.

There are other intangibles like the identity of the Flying Ranee seeming to have dissolved. While this seems subjective, it is important to regulars and that is why they may have pointed it out.

Marquee trains are a source of pride for the Railways and the familiar brings a sense of comfort for commuters. So does the fact that somebody is responsive to complaints and at least checks if something can be done. Let us see the same spirit for this train and commuter quibbles and discomfort become a thing of the past.
