The new year has begun with yet another fire in the city. The body of one person was found at a TV studio in Kanjurmarg, where a shooting set was gutted by a blaze on Saturday evening. This comes after the recent blazes at Kamala Mills and a Marol building.

Plenty has been written about how corruption is allowing proliferation of structures and buildings without proper firefighting equipment. One agrees that the Kamala Mills fire needs to be the catalyst that ensures a clean-up of such corruption. This is the moment that the city’s activists need to seize. Hugely tragic though it is, it should be a springboard to starting a movement that cleans up the dirt and apathy, within and outside.

All these fires prove that we, the public, need to become more responsible. Why look outside? Start with your homes. Do we have some firefighting capability and standard of safety in our own homes? Have your gas cylinder or pipe checked regularly by a reputed company. Wear cotton clothes while cooking, and at least, have one tube of salve for burns in your kitchen. These are the basics.

Housing societies too must move towards a more responsible emergency policy. Extinguishers on each floor are a must. Press your society managing committee to ensure that there is adequate firefighting equipment within the building. But even this is useless if you and other residents are ignorant about how to use it. Ensure that there are periodic demonstrations and training sessions on how to use the equipment. Make fire drills a priority and do imbibe the lessons with seriousness.

Clear the passages between apartments of all clutter, so that escape routes are not blocked. Encourage the committee to fine members who do not comply with this. Let us not shout about corruption and illegalities till we clean up our own house.
