Authorities need to ensure all infra work is top-notch

Construction of the flyover started in June 2021

Motorists will have to wait slightly longer to utilise the flyover recently constructed on the Western Express Highway near the domestic airport flyover by the MMRDA. The structure, also known as the T1 flyover, was expected to open a few days ago.  MMRDA officials said that the final touches and signboard installation is underway after which the flyover will be opened.

Construction work on the 790-m-long project started in June 2021 at a cost of Rs 48.43 crore (provisional). The MMRDA had decided to construct the two-lane flyover as motorists coming via the Sahar elevated road and going towards Bandra via the WEH get stuck in traffic near the domestic airport flyover signal.

We must see that all these so-called ‘finishing touches’ are well and truly finished before opening it up to the public.

We have so many instances where facilities are opened for the public. The decision makers then realise that something or the other is left unfinished. Lights or signage is missing, leading to massive confusion, in many cases. In some, railing or some other such amenity is unfinished or has yet to be installed.

At times, infra is awaiting opening because so and so important leader has yet to find the time to inaugurate it. Sometimes, it is waiting because different parties have to find a suitable name for it and are fighting about who it should be named after.

Delays for reasons like delivering a perfect facility with all features well thought of, can be explained. It is good to wait a few days so that you have something with long-term, 360-degree vision, rather than a hurried, half-baked delivery. Let us apply that to all the different projects on in the city.
