Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

Bengalis and non-Bengalis alike went a little ballistic on Twitter as 56-year-old Mamata Banerjeeu00a0-- referred to intriguingly as the 'stormy petrel of West Bengal politics'u00a0-- ended the uninterrupted 34-year-old rule of the Left Front. While a certain Betty Singh described her as 'the Chris Gayle of politics who hit a six with a single stroke', others referred to how 'Didi did it in style, making the impossible possible'. Sanjay Jha had a pertinent question though: 'WB had become Waste Bengal under the CPM,' he pointed out, 'but does Mamata have a real plan? Is she the panacea?' We'll all find out soon enough, won't we?

Cheesy does it
Pritish Nandy and Suhel Seth have long proved to be men with a lot to say. Today, the former tweeted: 'Sonia rules India. Pratibha, Rashtrapati Bhavan. Sheila, Mamata and Jaya are CMs. Munni and Sheila rule our hearts. Kani to rule Tihar. Woman power!' Seth, not to be outdone, came up with this: 'Mamata, Maya, Sheila, Jaya and Soniau00a0-- and we still call India a male-dominated society? We are the only emancipated nation in the world.' What I liked more was a tweet from a certain Danish Zaman: 'Sonia Gandhi will now have two more queens, Mamata and Jaya, to contend with.' True, that.

Boys to men
Ashton Kutcher made a surprise appearance on Twitter timelines following reports of him replacing Charlie Sheen for the American sitcom Two and a Half Men. In someone called Terry Bain's words though, 'Kutcher is the perfect choice, but I still don't get who's going to play the men.'

The last word
Celeb tweet of the day, courtesy Celina Jaitly: 'Friday the 13th is the most well marketed Friday, specially for the evil lot. May the good in you not forget good Friday.' I didn't understand a word. You?u00a0
