Senior police officials have been defending ASI Chandrakant Pawar, who is accused of hitting the SSC student Abdul Sattar Supariwala. ('Cop beat up an SSC student who couldn't make way for him in a crowded bus'u00a0 MiD DAY February 25) The cops earned a lot of respect after the 26/11 attack, but Pawar's act has undone

all the good. Police commissioner Hasan Gafoor should ensure that Pawar is punished. I have witnessed plainclothes policemen terrorising the public. It's not fair that the cops exploit their power and treat the common man like a criminal.

I was shocked to read that a cop beat up an innocent SSC student because he did not make way for him in a bus. ASI Pawar should be suspended and punished severely, so that a strong message is sent to the police force. Cops should be reminded that they are public servants and have no business taking law into their hands.

It's a shame that stringent action has not been taken against Pawar. The ordinary citizen should not be a mere spectator to this incident. Social workers and NGOs should take up this issue on a war footing.

The government should initiate programmes tou00a0 encourage citizens to help one another, and fight police goondaism in Mumbai. Let us, before the situation gets out of hand.
