The first day's brevity of Parliament session is already an ominous sign of things to come

The winter session after all was a total washout, and in the Budget session too, the government managed to pass merely five bills - with MPs spending a mere 12 per cent of the session time on legislation.
Obviously the string of scandals has impacted functioning of Parliament, with the government busy fending off corruption charges. But with several key legislations lined up, it is not just the government but the future of economic reforms that is hanging in the balance.
Memory plus
Politicians' memory, we all know, is usually a tricky thing, and almost always conveniently selective. Which may be why Kalmadi, doing a stint in Tihar jail and unable to get bailed out, thought it would be a good plea to sell to the court. Unfortunately, it didn't, though it swiftly trended on Twitter and caused much online mirth.
But Kalmadi's not alone in trying desperate measures. Some other worthies involved in another scam believe that one can't go very wrong by flinging as much mud as possibly can be flung, even at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and some other cabinet bigwigs. Only the current Parliament session will tell us which way the torrent of mud will flow and who will be swept away.
For a good cause
It was a mixed weekend for Dilli's multi-culturist ambitions. The long delayed and much awaited "Slut Walk" finally happened. Contrary to the expectations of cops, gathered masses of media and assorted men, it was rather desi-demure. Most of the participants in the protest chose to wear loose T-shirts and trousers, as they felt the cause was more important than the clothes. But the other scheduled event, La Tomatina Fest, the Spanish tomato festival, inspired by a recent Bollywood film, got buried under the weight of its own perhaps naive intentions. Clearly in these days of high food inflation, the idea of flinging hundreds of kilos of tomatoes at each other as "fun" did not find too many takers
