Age of the Twitter PR

Veni, vidi, vici! It came, saw and conquered the social networking and micro-blogging domain. It has become phenomenally popular and has the world following it. The obsession of netizens with Orkut, Facebook didn't deter it from breaking the chain of a pool of such websites and claiming the No 1 spot. Welcome to
the Twitterverse.

Twitter has become an important element of the new and emerging media.u00a0 It has been instrumental in bringing people together to support a cause u2014 be it 26/11, or the ongoing debate on the treatment meted towards the hockey players.

Also, with the hordes of socialites, filmwallahs and journalists making their presence felt through regular tweets, it has now become an 'in' thing to be a part of the Twitter world. But mind it; Twitter is much more than just a latest fad. Along with emerging as an effective communication tool, it has also become an easy PR platform.

How many people follow you on Twitter decides how big and popular a star you are

Be it an actor raving about the USP of his film u2014 making an attempt at winning audience, or a socialite ranting about last night's party or a TV show host striving to convince how his latest celeb chat show is unique, Twitter provides for a direct, cost-effective way to get to your target audience.

Farhan Akhtar is keeping his followers abreast about everything on Karthik Calling Karthik. His user name is 'KarthikCalling' keeping with the plot of the movie. I wonder if he will create different accounts with
each film he does. And what if Karthik Calling Karthik bombs at the box office?

Will he then change his user name to 'KarthikStopsCalling'?

Even SRK whose My Name Is Khan is releasing next month, is now an active part of the Twitteratti. With about 70,000 followers within a week and 100s of tweets every day, SRK seems to be making up for the time he missed being in news.

But the PRgiri doesn't stop with films. The B-town tribe is exposing the newer, lesser-known side of their personalities to the aam janata. However, which star is faking it and which one is actually playing himself is a question that remains...

On its way to conquering the e-world, Twitter and its Tweeps have changed the definition of a star u2014 how many people follow you decides how big and popular a star you are. Twitter has changed the definition of journalism u2014 film journalists don't mind picking up scoops and stories from star tweets and playing them up for maximum effect. Whatever it may be, Twitter Twitter has really become a Little Star.
