Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has announced her retirement in a heartfelt message dedicated to her mother, day after Olympic disqualification. Phogat, a leading figure in the wrestling world, withdrew from the Paris Olympics 2024 a day after being disqualified from the Women’s Freestyle 50kg event on 7th of August. She was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight. Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, Chief Medical Officer of the Indian team, detailed the situation, explaining that Phogat’s weight was 2.7 kg over the limit after the semi-finals. The team employed various methods to reduce her weight, including dehydration techniques, exercise, and cutting her hair. Despite these efforts, they were unable to meet the weight requirement in time. Following her disqualification, Phogat was rehydrated with intravenous fluids and is now physically and medically stable. With less than a day remaining before the final, her dreams of a gold medal were dashed. Watch video.
