Gulmarg, a popular skiing destination in north Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4°C. Pahalgam, a base camp for the Amarnath Yatra in south Kashmir, registered minus 3.2°C.
Qazigund, known as the gateway to Kashmir, logged a minimum temperature of minus 3.6°C. Konibal in Pampore saw a low of minus 3.5°C during the night. Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a night temperature of minus 2.8°C.
Kokernag was the coldest place in Kashmir, with a low of minus 8.1°C. Kashmir is currently experiencing ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the harshest period of winter, which began on December 21.
During Chillai-Kalan, snowfall is most likely, and the temperature drops significantly.
The Chillai-Kalan period will end on January 30, after which Chillai-Khurd (small cold) follows for 20 days. The final phase of winter, Chillai-Bachha (baby cold), lasts for 10 days.
