The CBI's anti-corruption branch launched an investigation into alleged corruption at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, focusing on former principal Dr Sandip Ghosh and Dr Debashish Som, a forensic medicine demonstrator.
Following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Dr Sandip Ghosh, initiating a probe into corruption at RG Kar Medical College.
The CBI's actions stem from a complaint filed by Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College, who accused Dr Sandip Ghosh and Dr Debashish Som of corruption and irregularities.
The CBI team raided the residences of Dr Sandip Ghosh and Dr Debashish Som, seizing documents and evidence as part of their ongoing investigation into corruption at the medical college.
The investigation was prompted by an order from the Calcutta High Court, which directed the CBI to look into the alleged corruption at RG Kar Medical College, leading to the filing of an FIR.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Calcutta High Court provided important documents to the CBI, which were instrumental in the agency filing an FIR against Dr Sandip Ghosh.
The Calcutta High Court has given the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation into corruption at RG Kar Medical College, with a deadline of September 17.
Amid the ongoing investigation, the Supreme Court ordered the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to take over security at RG Kar Medical College, following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor.
The investigation into RG Kar Medical College gained urgency after the tragic death of a trainee doctor in the institution’s seminar hall, leading to increased scrutiny and legal actions.
