Two women journalists, who were arrested over their social media posts on the recent communal incidents in Tripura, were on Monday ordered to be released on bail by a magistrate’s court.

Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha, journalists with HW News Network, were named in an FIR at Fatikroy police station in Tripura on Sunday on a complaint filed by a VHP supporter.

They were detained in Assam’s Karimganj on Sunday and were brought to Udaipur city of Tripura on transit remand for production before the magistrate’s court. HW News Network tweeted that Tripura police arrested them at 12.55 am on Monday.

A senior police officer in Agartala on Sunday said the journalists posted on social media that a mosque was burnt in Gomati district and a copy of the Quran was damaged. They suspect the videos uploaded by them were doctored. The Editors Guild of India on Sunday denounced police action against the journalists and demanded their immediate release.
